Saudi will intervene in Iraq if US withdraws-aide

Using money, weapons or its oil power, Saudi Arabia will intervene to prevent Iranian-backed Shi'ite militias from massacring Iraqi Sunni Muslims once the United States begins pulling out of Iraq, a security adviser to the Saudi government said on Wednesday.

Nawaf Obaid, writing in The Washington Post, said the Saudi leadership was preparing to revise its Iraq policy to deal with the aftermath of a possible U.S. pullout, and is considering options including flooding the oil market to crash prices and thus limit Iran's ability to finance Shi'ite militias in Iraq.

"To be sure, Saudi engagement in Iraq carries great risks -- it could spark a regional war. So be it: The consequences of inaction are far worse," Obaid said.

The article said the opinions expressed were Obaid's own and not those of the Saudi government.

"To turn a blind eye to the massacre of Iraqi Sunnis would be to abandon the principles upon which the kingdom was founded. It would undermine Saudi Arabia's credibility in the Sunni world and would be a capitulation to Iran's militarist actions in the region," he said.

The Saudis know that they are up as next on the Iranian hit list if we hand Iraq over to Iran.

Maybe they should be in Iraq now with some help.

They might be able to do a better job in there, too, seeing as how they're not bogged down by the American media.

The Shia led government refuses to allow it, just like they refuse to allow us to take down Sadr.

Pushing Iraqi "Democracy" before the country was at all ready was on of the worst mistakes of this war.

Yes, we know that famous Islamic appreciation for life over death would extend to the Saudis.

Why even get their commitment? It's good as gold and doesn't need a co-signer.

How would you determine a country is "ready"?

When the people no longer believe their Imam's are God's messangers on Earth.

The Iraqi people like most muslims actually do believe their religious leaders are the voice of God in the same way Christians believed that 1500 years ago.

"...considering options including flooding the oil market..."
The return of 50's gas prices. I see .25 cents a gallon.

OK, just wondered what you thought was the critical criteria. People can be kept ignorant for a long, long time. One can only hope that the new presence of thousands upon thousands of satellite dishes on Iraqi rooftops will help them learn the limitations of blind faith.

Right. They'll send money to fund terrorism, and volunteer their problem people to go get killed somewhere else.

Which they already do. We found that out the hard way on 9/11.

The Saudis specialize in not fighting.

Nice title, Reuters. I don't think that one Saudi will make much of a difference, unless his name is Rambo.

Well, most state gas taxes are way above that, but even if it were two bits plus the gas tax, it would surely drive the liberals nuts!

I've heard about Saudi "fighting" ability. OK, pull out, and let the ME "handle" its own problems for awhile. Anything that takes the worldwide total of Muslimes from one billion down to a manageable few million is perfectly fine with me. There's no "good guys" to root for on any side, anyway. Just people who seem less threatening to us than others at any given time.

--flooding the oil market to crash prices--

That might have a lot of unintended global side effects.

The tax alone is $.85.

Hmmm... divide and conquer.. Should have been the strategy all along.. Sunni vs Shiites.. with Kurds as kickers..

Iraq should be a republic.. 3 states..
