Right after we moved here about a year and a half ago, a Harrier crashed in someone's pool (among other places). It had live ammo on it. The pilot (thank God) was alright, but it made for a very nasty summer around here. Lots of hostilities.

Oh, and that pilot they are looking for in Iraq is from Luke AFB in Phoenix.

Not that I'm not glad the pilot is safe, but I thought pilots were expected to ride the bird all the way to the ground when over civilian airspace.

Does an ejection qualify as walking away from a "landing?" :)

Glad to hear the pilot is all right. The idiots who pulled out the "never saw combat" line on President Bush in 2000 and 2004 kept conveniently forgetting that flying a high-performance fighter--be it an F-102, an F/A-18, an old P-51, whatever--ain't exactly the safest job in the world.

Those F-102's were squirrely.

Yeah, they weren't exactly designed to be user-friendly on takeoff or landing. They were built for straight-line speed and that was about it.

Plane is on the ground, pilot is walking away.

Yep, it qualifies.

A lot of people don't understand the hazards involved. Everything has a failure rate, including high performance jet aircraft.

Pilot fine,

5-6 acre fire due to crashed aircraft, very windy here in Southern California today so they have to move fast.

Good news.

I don't think a plane crash is "good news."

That's why the Sycamore canyon area has never been developed.

Top Gun moved to Fallon, Nevada. Miramar is a Marine air base these days. Poor guys there are outrageously restricted in the airspace. No afterburners, pull the throttles way back as soon as airborne, etc. The city of SD is growing like a cancer all around it, and the politicians and developers covet the vast land the base is on.
