I'm thinking "RoboPilot". It doesn't conjure up happy thoughts as a passenger.

I've been thinking an external control system for emergencies would be a good idea since Payne Stewart and his companions asphyxiated in flight, but could not be rescued until the plane crashed.
It might also be a way for someone who has gotten into real trouble in the mode of JFK, Jr. to avoid disaster.
There are also instances when the pilot is stricken ill, that such a system could save lives.
Eventually, Moeller's highway in the sky may be a necessity anyway, and all planes might need similar equipment.

Not only could the system go stupid and crash the planePlanes are fly by wire as it is so "go stupid" is already there. Double and triple redundant systems take care of the rest. It's not like we have steel cables going from the pilot to the wings, etc., any more.

Getting a patent is one thing; implementing it to DO-178B Level A is quite another.
That sort of thing ain't cheap.
A couple of pistols in the cockpit and adequately trained pilots would be much more cost-effective.

I know how fly-by-wire works.
What this is talking about is a single system to take total control over the aircraft.

I volunteer to sit next to it! It's probably the safest seat on the plane!

Good idea. Thanks, Boeing.

You just made me very hungry.
I didn't get my Thanksgiving ham this year and am one very grumpy lobster, but I plan to remedy that this Christmas.
It's good to be an infidel. =-)

That half moon is the electronic schematic symbol for some type of logic gate.
It's been a while since my classes though and I can't tell what sort exactly.

I think the idea is okay but the execution would have to many unknown consequences.
I think the system they have developed now (which really mostly an integration of several dormant systems) is plenty good, with the F16's to shoot down being the very last part to the terrorist denial system.

Bad idea as far as I'm concerned. Not only could the system go stupid and crash the plane but just watch what would happen if terrorists or a hostile foreign government managed to figure out to manipulate the system.I agree.....I'll take a pilot armed, and with an additional ability to dump a sleeping gas into the passenger compartment.
Nighty, night, Jihadist.......you've just arrived in Guantanomo Bay.
