"An off-duty Fresno police officer who died early Friday after crashing his car into a tree had been drinking for about four hours before the crash, police Chief Jerry Dyer said.
Dyer, who has led his department in a nationally recognized campaign against drunken driving, said investigators are waiting for toxicology test results to determine whether Robert Sanchez's blood-alcohol content was above the legal limit of 0.08%."

"Dyer said he didn't have all the details, but apparently Sanchez's companions tried to talk him out of getting behind the wheel when he walked out of Ewell's."
Evidently he failed to heed their counsel.
After 'drinking for four hours and crashing into a tree' I'd say yes he would be above a .08 alcohol level if they don't fudge the results for him. He threw his life away.
Will they give him a "cops funeral" with a couple thousand fellow cops and call him a fallen hero?
NOt meaning to besmirch good cops everywhere.
They won't fudge the results.
I doubt they will give him a full fledged "lights and sirens" funeral escort.
Prayers for his family.
If he was that drunk then his friends should have done whatever was needed,up to and including kicking his ass-to keep him from driving.
OH I forgot, fire those officers(friends)who let him drive away. They should be glad no innocent people were hurt or killed, the lawsuits would have been spectacular. And justified.
The news said he was going so fast that the trunk of the tree was nearly to the dashboard and there were no skidmarks.
Truly. A death in the family is always heartbreaking, but it seems to me to be that much more painful around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
I have a sneaky suspicion that the Deputies are going to be asked those same questions in the near future.
For them to even suggest that his blood alcohol level was anything less than .08 is ludicrous under the circumstances.
Yeah, you are right.
I'll be on the lookout for an update on the BAC and post it when it becomes available.
NOt a very smart cop. How long was he with the department? I would think he should have seen enough to realize his actions were dangerous to himself and others.
Praying for his family and friends. This is a tough time for a death in the family.
Even if this guy was killed by someone else under similar circumstances it would be highly unlikely to treat this as an in the line of duty death.
The news report on KMPH 26 last night said he had been on the force for 6 years.
Perhaps this poor man was tormented by what he had seen or experienced as a police officer, or by personal problems.
I'm wondering if this was a suicide. Cops are human beings, too, and they have their demons just like everyone else.
Howdy Enterprise.
One has to wonder... did his drinking buds, when unsuccessful with their pleas, then themselves climb into their own vehicles and hit the road?
I've got two dead brothers-in-law who died in drunk driving situations. Sad when these deaths occur, but their numbers are higher than our casualty rates in the war, but we won't find any MSM types condemning drunk driving like they condemn the war.
Hi Diver Dave, I'm going to make a huge assumption here - YES! Unless proved otherwise, I assume that they also got into their vehicles and drove away.
