It's Round 2 for S.F. legislator in legal fight for gay marriage

The debate over gay marriage is back after a year's hiatus, and this time supporters are hopeful the political climate has changed since Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in 2005.

San Francisco Assemblyman Mark Leno, a Democrat who is openly gay, announced he will introduce a new marriage bill Monday, when legislators are sworn in for the upcoming session.

.....

`The governor's position,'' she said, ``hasn't changed.''

``To continue to push for full-blown gay marriage licenses is unlawful, unconstitutional and undemocratic,'' Thomasson said. ``The California Constitution specifically prohibits the Legislature from repealing voter-approved initiatives. This bill should be vetoed by Arnold Schwarzenegger on the same grounds as he vetoed it last year -- because the people have already voted to keep marriage between a man and a woman, just as God created it.''

In his 2005 veto message, Schwarzenegger said, ``I do not believe the Legislature can reverse an initiative approved by the people of California.''

He also suggested that legislative action was not needed. ``If the ban of same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, this bill is not necessary,'' he wrote. ``If the ban is constitutional, this bill is ineffective.''

Conservatives should be very glad that Arnold continues to be governor.

If Angelides has been elected, he would have signed it. He stated that on a number of occasions.

I hope conservatives have learned some lessons: a moderate Republican can be a big help in at least thwarting the Dems liberal socialist leftist agenda and pass some constructive measures (Arnold is trying to address redistricting again, which would help Republicans get elected) There is no comparison between this versus electing some leftist liberal, because conservatives rather stay home or vote third party, than vote against the Dems.

If the conservatives who did not vote for Arnold in November would have prevailed, we would soon have legalized homosexual marriage in CA -- because Angelides would have been elected.

Adults ( and even children) need to learn to consider the consequences of their actions -- it's a sign of maturity.

And Arnold did all he could to help Chuck Poochigian get elected Attorney General so the one representing California in subsequent court battles wouldn't be Jerry Brown, right?

Right?

Is your point that if Arnold wasn't able to do the impossible, you'd rather have had Angelides?

Jerry Brown had a lock. It is indeed unfortunate that the Republicans didn't come out fighting tooth and nail reminding the voters who Jerry Brown really is. But you can't blame Arnold for everything.

You're right. We should have had a handsome, charismatic, really super-duper popular Republican take the lead on that.

If only Arnold was a Republican. Oh well.

Schwarzenegger supported Poochigian?

Schwarzenegger campaigned with and for Poochigian?

Schwarzenegger reminded Californians what Brown had done?

Is there anything left to give gays other than the word "marriage"?

Arnie's approved all of the other gay special-rights bills.
It seems they now have the right to marriage, in all but name.

Just as God created it? Give this woman some kind of award for speaking the truth.

Isn't there something more important that Mr. Leno could devote his attention to like feeding the poor or making sure Grandma isn't eating dog fool. LOL. (sarcasm)
