Liberals and libertarians may find more overlap in some aspects of policy, particularly on social issues. Philosophical libertarians may be as appalled as many liberals by government intervention in the Terri Schiavo case, in the push to create laws against gay marriage, in the movement to build a wall to reduce Mexican immigration, and in the increasing push to regulate and ban abortion. But if we look carefully at these four examples, the underlying principles at work differ as often as they overlap. William Saletans excellent book on the evolution of the abortion debate, for example, shows that liberal advocates who had initially framed their support for abortion as part of a feminist struggle for equal rights over time moved to adopt a libertarian keep the government out of my bedroom approach in order to win over conservative and male voters. That strategy was quite effective in protecting efforts to curtail abortion rights, but, according to Saletan, it also made it more difficulty to argue for public funding of abortion for poor women...

Terri Schiavo

Terri Schiavo made your top 10 list in 2005. However, it is difficult not to take notice of how the mainstream media continues to do what they can to justify what Michael Schiavo and the courts did to her.
From the beginning the popular media missed most of the story. When Michael Schiavo admitted in 1994 that he intended to marry the woman he was living with once Terri was dead, he effectively abandoned her. Despite this, and the fact that the hearsay testimony of Terris wishes suddenly surfaced eight years after her still unexplained collapse, Judge George Greer ruled to end Terris life.
There is much more the media continues to incorrectly report. However, if anyone would take the time to look into the facts of this case, it would be difficult not to recognize that this was one of the most egregious miscarriages of justice ever to have taken place in our nation.
We can only hope that what happened to my sister will one day be exposed.

Terri Shiavo cover up continues

Although the story of Terri Shiavo took place in 2005, the cover up continues as her killer walks free and profits from her murder. Call it what you want, but when you look at the facts to this case, if things had been handled differently from day one Michael Shiavo would be in jail right now. I was never really aware how much the media misreports until you're close to the story and know the facts. Then you read what the media "thinks" are correct facts without doing any true form of reporting or verifying of a rumor. It's really very sad that this cover up cost someone her life and the cover up continues in 2006.

The hidden truth of Terri Schiavo
Posted by Caron on Dec 07, 2006 08:34
Absolutely the worst cover up was the truth to what really happened to Terri Schiavo. She was not brain dead. She was not on life support. She was not dying. She was not a political pawn, not until her estranged spouse made her into one. She was a human being that the right to die crowd embraced and turned her into a cruel mascot, by misleading the public, to further their agenda. And certainly by far the biggest coverup is the TRUTH that was not told by her spouse in his "tell all" book. Shame he didn't explain why he told different accounts on what happened the night of Terri's collapse from what he stated in the malpractice trial to what he stated in the guardianship trials. Let's not forget the entire buddy system and cover ups to further ones political and/or career aspirations. A real shame. A real misleading and erroneously reported story by the Florida newspapers. Shame on the people involved to dehydrate a disabled human being to death. Shame. Shame.

The bugaboo "intervention" by Congress had exactly no effect on the case (and shame on Congress for letting that happen!). None. Zip. Nada. Ptui. All it did was let rogue judges sneer at the legislative branch.
Libertarians of my acquaintance are bright people. They can draw distinctions. They can, if they look, trace the "invervention" back to Michael going to a court -- people, courts are part of government! -- to ask the government to kill his wife. The pundits (including Michael Schiavo himself) who rage at intervention are blaming the wrong party. What the heck business is it of a judge to make a death decision for an innocent disabled woman, and to block her family's involvement in a private, personal matter?
Do you realize the libertarians and liberals have turned providing food and water into a crime?
