Which can be easily split between German, Dutch, Austrian, and Swiss. For example, my adopted grandfather used to tell me he was Irish and German. I have the family tree. One set of grandparents came from Austria, not Germany.
And then there is the famous case (at least legend) of the Pennsylvania Dutch being labeled as Dutch because when asked, they apparently responded with Deutsch.
