Sailor to plead on secrets to Russia
Washington Times ^ | 12/1/06 | Bill Gertz

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Ariel J. Weinmann is expected to plead guilty Monday to several of the charges, including espionage related to the compromise, said his attorney, Phillip Stackhouse.

U.S. defense officials familiar with the case said Petty Officer Weinmann supplied Russian intelligence with a manual labeled "secret" that contained information about the nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Albuquerque. He had worked as a fire control technician on the submarine before deserting in July 2005.

The manual is considered sensitive because it reveals capabilities of Los Angeles-class submarines, like the Albuquerque, that could allow the Russians to locate and track the submarines, the officials said.

"There's a manual missing, and he's believed to have provided it to the Russians," one official said. ...

He also attempted to pass secrets to a foreign government agent in Bahrain in March 2005.

Officials said the submarine manual was passed to the Russians during the August meeting in Vienna, which is the basis for the espionage charge.

The court papers stated that he deserted and stole the laptop with secrets on July 1, 2005, and smashed the hard drive on the computer in Vienna in March 2006.

In all, he is charged with six counts, including espionage, desertion, failure to obey orders and larceny. It is not known which counts will be dropped as part of the plea deal.

Charge him properly and string him up! trea·son (trē'zən) pronunciation n. 1. Violation of allegiance toward one's country or sovereign, especially the betrayal of one's country by waging war against it or by consciously and purposely acting to aid its enemies.

With a name like Ariel J. Weinmann you would think he would know how bad the Russkies treated Jews, assuming he's Jewish of course. Regardless, hang him.

Hanging is too good for him.

Give him an actual life sentence and make him look at pictures and listen to recordings of Helen Thomas.

"It is not known which counts will be dropped as part of the plea deal."

What plea agreement? I fail to understand why, if they've got a guy dead to rights, why give him a break with a plea agreement? Throw the book at him! NO PLEA AGREEMENTS!!!

I can't even post what I think they should do to him. He should be punished to the full extent of the law, with no mercy extended. One cannot say what the results of his actions are.

Since he was an FT, he was well trained and above normal intelligence, so he knew what he did. Keelhauling is too good for him.

Let him be but the first of many. The tree needs watering.

Either we are equal or we are not. Good people should be armed where they will, with wits and guns.

Thanks to the Mooneys, the Opies and their online associates for keeping us very frequently apprised of this broad and ancient conspiracy. [Little irony and humor there.]

But more seriously, the Navy isn't going to throw Weinmann away, so we might assume that his cooperation is being leveraged.

Apparently you don't believe that we should be "apprised" of the loyalty to this country by one of the usual suspects. And treating it with "humor" indicates where your loyalty lies.

I wish they had noted his rating; assuming they are correct about the level of secrets disclosed (Confidential and Secret but not C/W) this doesn't appear to be such a serious breach. Nonetheless, this idiot is a treasonous bastidge who should be strung up!

It's obvious that you're referring to Jews as the "usual suspects," but I doubt that you would say that more directly.

"And treating it with "humor" indicates where your loyalty lies."

Yes, my loyalties are with Isreal and the USA--not with Nazis or Islamist sympathizers of any kind. That's honest, direct speech.

As a former CTM, security was always stressed. If he went as far as he did to cough up the goods to foreign agents, then he willfully betrayed his shipmates and the country. He'll see Levenworth, KS. to be sure.
