X-Rated 'Pornament' Christmas Decorations Raise Eyebrows
WKMG-TV Local 6 ^ | December 1, 2006 | Staff

Several new holiday decorations considered X-rated are being sold in Florida at a store popular with young children, according to a report. ...

Six controversial ornaments, which can be purchased for $9 at Spencer's stores in Jacksonville and other parts of Florida, include an X-rated snowman and reindeer.

A television station reported that the pornaments can be found on store shelves at the Regency Square Mall in Jacksonville in plain view of children and to anyone who walks into the Spencer's stores.

Store workers said that there were no restrictions on who can purchase the pornaments in the store.

"It is just sad they have to stoop to this kind of thing to defame Christmas," Hillcrest Baptist Church Rev. Jim Patterson said. "It says we are nothing more than sexual acts or psychical being and we are much more than that. We are spiritual beings and this is a spiritual holiday. And, why bring it to that level. It makes no sense to me."

I happen to have a copy of Aldrich's Unlimited Access in my office. Here are a few snips from the relevant section:

""Gary, come here, look at this!" It was a mobile of twelve lords a-leaping. They were leaping all right. The ornament consisted of tiny clay male figurines. Each was naked and had a large erection. My friend said, "Whoops!" and he dropped it on the floor."

"Three French hens were French-kissing in a menage a trois. So many of the ornaments didn't celebrate Christmas as much at[s] they celebrated sex, drugs, and rock and roll."

"I went over to one of the tables I hadn't looked at yet. What's this? Of course. Two turtle doves, but they didn't have shells this time - they were joined together in an act of bird fornication."

Spencer's doesn't only sell gag gifts (unless they're gifts that make you Gag!) and toys. They have things there I wouldn't put in my home nor would I want my children or grandchildren to have them. They've always been a not so nice store for people who have some sense of moral values.

I remember going into a mall bookstore and seeing a graphic book on homosexual sex on a table that children could easily see it. I complained to the person at the checkout about that. You'd think they'd realize that homo sex is NOT something you want children to see but they could care less.

Imagine if the wife is elected--maybe they will have a lesbian display.

Oh, dear, this is terrible and I am very bad today.

Well if you're stupid enough to let your young kid into Spencer's alone you shouldn't be shocked by what they bring home. It's not Spencer's fault for selling it, it's yours for allowing your kid to buy it. There's no age restrictions to buy a lot of things. Maybe we should ban them all..

Growing up there was a Spencer's in our local mall. As a teenager, you went into to laugh at some of the stuff, as most teenagers do, but nothing else. The only thing I remember buying from Spencers was a couple of Maiden t-shirts and a gag gift for a friend on his wedding day.

You know, I didn't complain for that very reason, nobody seems to care. I just won't take my kids back into that store and I'll buy my books from amazon.

As long as you don't want government to do something about it, I'm all for you. The ornaments are in poor taste and obviously offenseive to Christians.

I agree. I think the store is no longer in business there. Maybe others felt the same.

Mrs. Max and I were in Border's last Friday and ran across the same thing, a box on sexual positions, full of color photos. It was at eye level of a five year old. I complained about it to the manager and they removed them.

Next time I'm in there I'll make sure they didn't put them back.

That crap really makes me mad. Who are these people that think it's their decision when our kids are ready to be exposed to adult sexuality?

Ok These ornaments are suppose to be funny and are meant for adults everything in the store is meant for adults. If these ornaments don't appeal to your sense of humor than thats ok. But a lot of people buy those and other things in the store. And I mean no offense by this comment and I'm not talking about you specifically just people in general, the same people that make these complaints are the ones who run in for birthday or wedding gifts from the stores "love" section hoping not to be seen by anyone. I use to work there for a few years and dealt with people who came in for those things let their kids run wild in the store and then complained about the stores content. Every one knows what kinds of things Spencer's carries, so if you don't like it why go in? And I'm curiouse why this year people are complaining about the ornaments, when for the past 5 years they carried these same ornaments? whats different now?

my question to you is who are these people who are allowing their children to learn everything from malls and TV? Why should I take on the responsibility of censoring other peoples children?

Why don't you walk around naked then? You are censoring other people's children when you put clothes on.

You mean I can't take my children to the mall because some pig thinks they can display obscene material in a public place? I need to buy all their clothes, shoes and books online?

No wonder the muslim people hate us so bad. Our decadence and immorality will be our undoing.

I don't and never will step foot in Spencer's gifts. It is an adult oriented store and not for children. I do, however, expect to be able to go in a family bookstore without having my children subjected to obscene material. I'm amazed that that is too much to ask.

comparing, the censorship of kids in a store to walking around naked is a bit extreme. I have no comments on book stores and that material, I am only commenting on Spencer's. And for the record I have personally tried to stop kids from buying things in the store that I felt they shouldn't be buying only to have their parents come back in and tell me it wasn't my place and i should let them buy it.
And The "offensive" material in Spencer's is not displayed in the window or in the fronts of the store. So it is the parents fault for allowing the children to go into the store in the first place. You should not make stores responsible for children who either aren't listening to their parents and going in any or for parents who are too afraid to tell their children they shouldn't view certain things.

My beef wasn't with Spencer's, it was with Barnes and Noble, a family store with a children's section. I thought I made that clear in my original post. A store that has a children's section has a moral responsibility to not have smut clearly visible, at a child's eye view, right next to the kids section. At the very least, they could have a sign at the head of the section, stating that it's for adults only so unwitting parents don't stumble upon it with their children.
