Bush accepts Bolton's U.N. resignation

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent 12 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Unable to win Senate confirmation, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton will step down when his temporary appointment expires within weeks, the White House said Monday. ADVERTISEMENT

Bolton's nomination has languished in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for more than a year, blocked by Democrats and several Republicans. Sen. Lincoln Chafee (news, bio, voting record), a moderate Republican who lost in the midterm elections Nov. 7 that swept Democrats to power in both houses of Congress, was adamantly opposed to Bolton.

Critics have questioned Bolton's brusque style and whether he could be an effective bureaucrat who could force reform at the U.N.

President Bush gave Bolton the job temporarily in August 2005, while Congress was in recess. Under that process, the appointment expires when Congress formally adjourns, no later than early January.

The White House resubmitted Bolton's nomination last month. But with Democrats capturing control of the next Congress, his chances of winning confirmation appeared slight. .....

Sad. The position should be left vacant for two years, but I know that our "new tone" policy coming out of the White House will prevent that.

What a shame. The last (only?) person in the administration with any balls. I guess Condi has free reign now to do absolutely nothing.

The Leftists can hardly believe their good fortune and are overcome with glee. The Republican Congress and Administration dressed up like Santa Clause and delivered the 2006 election to the Democrats as an early Christmas present.

Meanwhile, sane Americans--the Republican base support--are looking at their empty stockings with bewilderment--and fury!

Thanks a lot, Republicans! Thanks to you, America heads toward a trainwreck with Democrats at the helm of the Ship of State.

The sinking ship of state is apparently descending into the murky waters quite rapidly!

Ready your lifeboats!

Out of curiosity---what is up with this 'eat our own' mentality?

Women and young people voted for Democrats in record numbers this past election. But instead of trying to inspire them to join the GOP, we savage our own base?

Seems like a strategy for perpetual failure to me.

Absolutely right...and the bad guys (UN members, the Dummiecrap party) win again.

What kind of duck is Bush? He is beyond lame now. The next two years are going to be painful. Now that America is in retreat, expect the Islamic fascists to strike out again. They sense blood.
