If Americans persuade their friends Saudis to be as tolerant toward Jews and Christians as today Iran is, it will represent HUGE advance for the cause of freedom in the Middle East.

Since Saudis build mosques in United States, it seem only proper that they would allow churches (and synagogues) to be open in Saudi Arabia.

The other parallel is that Germany, before Hitler, probably was the least anti-semitic country in all of Europe. They had relatively few anti-semitic incidents compared to Eastern Europe, or even Britain and France.

Now if we can only stop Amercian, Jewish people from being their own worst enemys, ( by voting for Democrats and all sorts of other liberals and 'progessives'), we might be able to make some progress in the WOT....

"Nonetheless, many Iranian expatriates long for regime change. Houman Sarshar doubts the voices calling for change inside Iran will remain silent. “A population of 75 million—with approximately 50 million born after 1978—is being run by a population of mullahs 60 and 70-plus [years old]. If only 60 percent [of the population] wants a completely secular government, then it’s over,” he says. Milani believes that without $70-per-barrel oil, the regime would not survive long. “The age of pseudo-totalitarian corrupt dictatorships has come to an end,” he says. “The majority of Iranian society doesn’t want it. But tactically this is a very nimble regime, very brutal, and it has a lot of money.”

Sorry. I don't buy this argument for several reasons.

First, what most columinsts such as Michael Leeden like to point out - that the Iran is an overwhelmingly young nation and the young have no affinity for Mullahs, are sophisticated, like the West, blah blah - is that those are only a small sample of teens, 20 somethings in TEHRAN. You go to the back country, the young folks are much more inclined to repression and hating the West. But since reporters spend most of their time in the capital then by golly that MUST be how all the young think.

Second, there was an article in the Washington Times regarding Ahamajaidiot's election in which they pointed out that he came to power on a populist campaign i.e. promising more free goodies and sticking it to the West with quite alot of public support. Something tells me that the Iranian love of welfare, idiotic national fervor and their opposition to having it stopped is a much stronger force than any sort of "student rebellion."

Finally, the Iranian people are either cowards or enablers. They're not deaf or stupid. They know what sort of reaction of the West might have due to their nuke program - WAR. Their continued silence for YEARS all the while their country lurches toward a possible WMD conflict speaks volumes.

One notes that every society that has expelled the Jews has subsequently failed. More than coincidence?

International Religious Freedom Report 2006--Iran. Another perspective on religious tolerance and freedom in Iran from the USG.

"On numerous occasions, the U.S. State Department spokesman has addressed the situation of the Baha'i and Jewish communities in the country. The U.S. government has publicly condemned the treatment of the Baha'is in UN resolutions, including one that passed in the General Assembly in 2005. The U.S. government has encouraged other governments to make similar statements. Since 1999, the Secretary of State has designated Iran as a "Country of Particular Concern" under the International Religious Freedom Act for particularly severe violations of religious freedom."

Iranians are upset that the government has shut down blogs as well as Shargh, the reformist newspaper. “It makes people angry. But go to the streets to revolt?” says Javedanfar. “Only two things would make a revolution overnight. One: Shoot the entire Iranian football team. Two: Ban the sale and eating of Persian rice. Then you will have a revolution on your hands. Until then, as they say in New Jersey, fuggedaboutit.”

Sheesh. They're as cynical as us.
