Russia celebrates the 65th anniversary of the counteroffensive beginning in the Second World War on December 5, the Itar-Tass news agency reports.

It has been 65 years since the counteroffensive was launched on December 5, 1941 along the front from Kalinin (Tver) to Yelets. Historians consider the 1941-1942 Battle of Moscow to be one of the most outstanding operations in the Second World War and a key turn in the course of the war.

The battles continued 200 days and involved over seven million men and officers, 53,000 field guns and mortars, 6,500 tanks and over 3,000 warplanes on both sides.

One guesses these are Soviet historians.

The Germans were ultimately stopped outside of Moscow after their strength had been sapped by distance and weather, and the Soviets failed to capitalize upon German weaknesses during their counteroffensive to strike the crippling blow which was in the offing.

More black eyes than feathers in caps on both sides.

Soviet troops freed a number of towns around Moscow.

Well, took them from the Germans, anyway.
