Officials detain two undocumented immigrants that gained access to Randolph AFB [Texas]

Two workers hired for construction jobs at Randolph AFB used counterfeit papers to get on base.

"The two individuals that we have detained right now are Mexican nationals," said Jerry Robinette of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The suspects provided documents that looked real enough to fool the Air Force guards who let them on base.

"In this situation, that's one of the things that we've been looking at, is the use of unauthorized or counterfeit Social Security numbers," Robinette said.

The search for the workers caused a back up at the Randolph gate as airmen and ICE agents checked the IDs of everyone who tried to leave.

The workers probably didn't know about the investigation until they were apprehended, investigators said.

"Working in conjunction with the military, we were able to approach the employees there at the different constructions sites and were able to identify two individuals that we believe are illegal [immigrants]," Robinette said.

The sweep netted more than undocumented workers.

"We made three other arrests of U.S. citizens that happened to be working there at the construction sites that had warrants for their arrests," Robinette said.

ICE has yet to decide whether administrative or criminal charges will be filed against the workers and whether the employers will be charged.

Why is border security so obviously important to us, and such a difficult concept for politicians?

There is no doubt in my mind that some of the workers building houses on our base are illegal. I see them circumventing the gate and cutting through the clinic parking lot all the time. I have said something to the gate guards before, but they have said there is nothing they can do if they aren't caught red-handed.

There are people with these huge telephoto lenses that take pics of our airfield all the time from across the street and of our housing areas through the fences, but if you mention it to someone, they act like you are being overly paranoid.

The Emplyer isn't required--or legally liable--to do much more than receive the fake SS information and report their wages.

Take them to Laredo, turn them loose, and they'll be back with NEW I.D. Funny, when I went to the dark side of Houston to get my 'fake I.D.', I said, HEY, THIS IS REALLY MY NAME, he laughed and said, That's what EVERYONE says.

Put them in the custody of Bill Richardson. He's looking for campaign workers.
