GRAFENWÖHR, Germany — U.S. criminal gangs have gained a foothold in the U.S. military and are using overseas deployments to spread tentacles around the globe, according to the FBI.

FBI gang investigator Jennifer Simon said in an e-mail to Stars and Stripes this week that gang members have been documented on or near U.S. military bases in Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea and Iraq.

“It’s no secret that gang members are prevalent in the armed forces, including internationally,” Simon said, adding that the FBI is preparing to release a report on gangs in the military.

Among the cases:

¶ In Iraq, armored vehicles, concrete barricades and bathroom walls have served as canvasses for spray-painted gang art. At Camp Cedar II, about 185 miles southeast of Baghdad, a guard shack was recently defaced with “GDN” for Gangster Disciple Nation, along with the gang’s six-pointed star and the word “Chitown,” according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

¶ In Germany, a soldier is being prosecuted this week for the murder of Sgt. Juwan Johnson, beaten to death on July 4, 2005, allegedly during a Gangster Disciple initiation in Kaiserslautern.

¶ In September, Department of Defense Dependents

Must be Army or Air Force. Gangbangers would get weeded out of the Marine Corps.

The military needs to be more overt and aggressive about kicking people out. This is yet another reason why. Many moons ago, in my first unit, a guy from our division was caught downtown handing out neo-Nazi pamphlets with his wife. He was physically escorted from point to point of his outprocessing so fast his feet didn't touch the ground, and was out on his ass in no time.

Nowadays, the military is so hard up to keep their numbers out of the red, they'll turn a blind eye to almost anything. It's a bad trend. Even though it hurts politically, it's far better to weed out elements like that as soon as they are identified.

I would hope that the gentlemen in question would be escorted out of the Armed Forces in double time.

I didn't see that in the story.

Serious stuff. They get out and bring their expertise to the streets. Not to mention commiting crimes while in uniform globally is not anything we need.

Strong enforcement of zero tolerance should be the path.

It's not in the story. It's a personal opinion. Although I recently separated from the military, so it's not an entirely uneducated one.

Seems like they have taken conflicting oaths. Gangs are a form of terrorist organization, seems like treason come into this somewhere.

Firing squad.

“It’s no secret that gang members are prevalent in the armed forces.."

Prevalent means, powerful, dominant, widespread.

Widespread, in terms of individual incidents in different locations around the world, may be true. But, neither "widespread", "powerful" or "dominant" were substantiated by the few incidents reported. The one report of 300 "gang members" on one single base, which was countered by another official from the same base, since like hyberpole on the face of it.

I am not dismissing the idea that gang members make it past the recruiters and the screeing before and during basic training. I do reject the idea that it is "prevalent" in the military.

As we have seen througout the Iraq war period, we have some self-haters WITHIN the military ranks themselves, and I personally believe that elements within and without the military may want to hype this story, for its value on the "anti-military" theme.

I hate those worthless yo-yo whasup G dog b!%@#&#s.

They should be lined up and shot.

My kid basically devoted himself to the whole gangsta ideology and valued his 'homies' over his Mom & I (who both went thru hell with his crap). We'd have had to chain him to a floor to get him to be civil.

Between the age of 16 and 19 he fathered 4 kids (all differrent mothers of course)and today is due to be released from prison this February (no 23yo). Made an appearance on the Jenny Jones show to mark his crowning achievement.....whos the father of my child show.

I swear he is a white male that wants to be black.

He has $27K in back child support waiting for him when he gets out.

What a waste!

That true you can't be defending the president of the U.S.A and also the Ganster Disciple Nation president, or chief, or main pimp or what ever the leaders name is because that GDN is automatically an enemy of the state. Well, maybe they could make a GDN division and charge them with seeking out Osama. I think they could be affective if watched closely. Make them shoot at terrorists instead of each other here at home.

You haven't been talking to the Air Force. We (the JAG Corps) don't "turn a blind eye" to this crap. Problem is, we don't prefer or refer charges, the commander does, and my last statement to each one I've worked for as an SJA was always, "but you're the commander and the decision is yours." You can lead a horse to ethical water, but...

Colonel, USAFR

Praying for you this Advent season. Seeing a child make tragic decisions tears out a parent's heart.

I should have been more specific. It's not the overall military that turns a blind eye, it is the individual units that may fail to notice or prosecute. The commander always has great latitude in things like this. I've worked with a number of people that were basically openly gay, to the point of bringing parters to unit functions, and the unit maintained sufficient plausible deniability to make them feel comfortable without openly acknowleding that they know.

The commanders look at the numbers they have to work with, and decide just how hard they want to drop people from the rolls. A shady gangmember may be a very good mechanic or parachute rigger, and good people can be hard to come by.
