What's driving Obama-mania?
CS Monitor ^ | Dec 11, 2006 | Gail Russell Chaddock

MANCHESTER, N.H. – With standing room crowds chanting for the star to show, Sunday's Democratic fundraiser could have been a rock concert. But it was only Sen. Barack Obama's first visit to the nation's first primary state.

If Senator Obama should jump into the Democratic presidential primary, where he is now ranked just behind Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York in recent polls, Democrats in the land of retail politics wonder if there's a living room big enough to hold the throngs who'd come to hear him.

"Right now, he's a rock star. Getting 1,500 people out on a Sunday afternoon ... says something different is going on here," says Jim Craig, former Democratic leader in the New Hampshire House.

So what's driving Obama-mania?

It isn't a single set of issues such as the war or the economy. Rather, the attraction seems to be a mix of Obama's own compelling personal narrative and many voters' desire for a less caustic brand of politics.

"It's the sense that you're in the presence of someone who is touched with the gift of grace," says Ross Baker, a political scientist at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. Obama, Illinois' junior senator, exemplifies the hope that there's some way to triumph over the intense polarization of American politics, he adds.

A barely known state lawmaker and community organizer in Chicago, Obama shot to superstar status after an electrifying speech at the 2004 Democratic national convention in Boston. With a father from Kenya and a mother from Kansas, he embodies two racial cultures deeply at odds in American history.

The media is driving it. Just saw CNN gushing over the guy even though he is just an empty suit with no experience. Maybe they like his middle name. I find him bland.

LOL. Count me as one of those who don't get what the appeal is. I don't even think he's good looking. Ford, however, is a good looking guy, imo. I think it's the media making this guy the newest american celebrity.

>>>What's driving Obama-mania?

The media. They want to feign that there's a story there, and Hillary's not just going to get coroneted.

O Rielly said it best today: " Obama is the new Howard Dean."

By that he meant the new darling of the far left kooks in the democrat party.

He's a black man in a suit. The media love it, the mouth-breathing liberals "know" he will fix everything and will teach the cracker-whitey's a lesson on being real.....I think I lived in Kalifornia too long.

I DON'T KNOW WHY I LOVE HIM
(From the musical, "Barack Obama Superstar")
Tune: "I Don't Know How to Love Him"

I don't know why I love him,
My Barack, my Obama;
I've been charmed, yes really charmed,
By his trim physique, so slim and sleek--
I'm awed by his mystique.

I don't know why he's running,
I don't see any substance;
No real plan, flash in the pan,
And I've heard such empty words before
That when I close my eyes
He's just a bore.

But I like his face,
And I like his voice;
Makes my heartbeat race!
Makes me feel all moist!
I never thought I'd come to this:
Obama is my choice.

Don't you think it's rather shallow
I should vote for this fellow?
I'm the one who's always been
So pure, so pissed, so feminist;
I don't need men, oh no--
He scares me so.

But I like his face,
And I like his voice;
Makes my heartbeat race!
Makes me feel all moist!
I never thought I'd come to this:
Obama is my choice.

Yet, like in a romance novel,
I'm in love with a male model;
I've got to look! He signed my book!
My heart runs wild! I'll bear his child!
I want the world to know:
He's my "Big O"!
Obama, go!
I love you so!

What is the driving the mania behind Barak Ibn Ismail Mohammed Hussein Obama, is the fact that after Bubba he is the only Decmocrat who can articulate anything, even if it is nothing. His blackness (or grayness) is a nice touch but I don't believe it's the primary driving force. If it were, the Shaprtons and Jacksons would have been their nominee ages ago.

I want to know where he was born. Is he a natural born citizen of the U.S.? The way people are flocking to him, I suspect he could be the Anti-Christ.

Barack Obama is very similar to Deval Patrick and, in some ways, Harold Ford jr.
All are black, but not very. All are extreme leftists.

And all attract huge shares of white votes from white voters who don't agree with them about anything.

The "Obama for President" thing is scary because he (and Deval) have copped on to the fact that there is a huge population of white voters, mostly but not all young, who have been so stigmatized by the incessant charge of "white racism" that they are looking for a candidate who can bring them redemption.

I'm reminded of an interview in the Boston Globe in October. The subject was the wife of a union drywall guy who was out of work because all the drywall in Massachusetts is hung by illegal aliens. Deval Patrick's obsession with protecting illegals was taking bread off of her table. And yet, she was voting for him. Why?

"I'm voting for him because he is so well-spoken".

Well spoken compared to WHAT, exactly?

Compared to nigg***, that's what. This woman, and millions of others like her, are guilty not because of their parents or grandparents. They are guilty because of what they believe and feel RIGHT NOW.

It's a deep dark secret. Wives don't tell husbands. Children don't tell parents. NOBODY tells teacher (who says kids are stupid?).

But deep down, this woman and half of the white electorate thinks that blacks are different - way different - and to expiate their guilt and shame, they flock to Deval, and Obama.

I thnk that he actually has a shot.
