The greatest chessplayer who ever pushed wood (even better than now-crazy favorite son Fischer, or Capablanca, or Alekhine, or any of them), if Kasparov probably thinks his celebrity status will save him from assassination, he's terribly, badly, mortally wrong. Putin and his people are becoming more brazen by the day. In fact, I'd guess recent high-profile assassinations were probably Putin's typically Russian way of testing the waters. Kill a brave, respected journalist, nothing happens. Kill a disaffected, highly vocal and visible former KGB operative (in a particularly radioactive way), nothing happens.

Shooting or arresting Kasparov is not problematic. Kasparov, for all his blinding, superb genius, has failed to play out all the possibilities in a game where checkmate is literally fatal.

He may feel the cause worth risking his life.
