PORTSMOUTH, R.I. --A high school senior who posed in chain mail with a prop sword for his official yearbook picture is suing -- after the school rejected the photo saying it has a "zero tolerance" policy for weapons.

The A-C-L-U filed the suit against the Portsmouth school committee on behalf of Patrick Agin.

Agin is a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, which promotes research and reenactments of medieval history.

The A-C-L-U points out that the school principal offered to allow the photo in the yearbook if Agin paid to put it in the advertising section. It also says that the school's mascot is a Revolutionary War soldier who sometimes carries a weapon.

The schools superintendent was not available for immediate

No school like the Old school.

My chain-mail protects me from swords, arrows, and favorable attention from women.

But I want to face the peril!

With apologies to FReeper SCAers, who are undoubtedly FAR cooler than the general run, SCAers are, for the most part, bozos. The name - the Society for Creative Anachronism - is directly at odds with what the report alleges is its purpose: "promotes research and reenactments of medieval history."

Creative anachronism and faithful re-enactment are worlds apart.

Also, the lad looks dorky beyond belief, and I'd have to reject his picture on unibrow grounds alone. He doesn't realize what a favor the administrators are doing him.

Further, chain mail (like Spandex) is a privilege, not a right.

That said, Ramius is correct - if the photo isn't deceiving, the lad is "wielding" a Starfire, which is the combat sword of choice for us fightin' actors. VERY nice sword.

In 5 years, he'll be glad that this didn't appear in the yearbook.

Well, if you want your son to remain a virgin for a long time, I think SCA is a good idea.

Uhh ... guess again. They don't call it the Society for Creative Adultery without good reason.

It's said if you can't some at SCA event, then you're really hopeless. Even some of the dorkiest guys look hot in armor.
