James Whelan: Far from being an evil dictator, Pinochet rescued Chile

Contrary to conventional wisdom, former Chilean autocrat Augusto Pinochet averted civil war and saved millions from the destruction of socialism --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

December 15, 2006 SIX months before Salvador Allende was overthrown on September 11, 1973, Volodia Teitelboim told an interviewer for the Communist Party daily newspaper in Santiago that if civil war were to come, then 500,000 to one million Chileans would die. Teitelboim knew whereof he spoke. He was then the No.2 man in the Chilean Communist Party, the third largest in the Western world (after France and Italy), and a senior partner in Allende's Marxist-Leninist government.

The Communists were then planning to seize total power in the country, though they were not in as much a hurry to do so as the Socialists, the principal party in the Allende coalition and one passionately committed to revolutionary violence. So the Communists and the Socialists shared the same goal - ending once and for all the bourgeois democratic state - but differed on methods. Allende, a Socialist, was somewhere in between, wavering between his own bourgeois tastes and the totalitarian temptation.

As the pro-stalinst, "Nation" magazine would say, "PINOCHET KILLED OVER 3,200 PEOPLE."

In the face of Allende's attempts to subvert the Chilean democratic tradition, and usher in a communist dictatorship, the Chiliean military was forced to act. And while attempting to restore order, and defend the Chilean democractic-Republic, the military had to kill over 3,000 far-left, bolshevik defenders of the nascent Chilean communist state. The left always blames the attack on the Allende uprising against Chilean democracy, as if it were the CIA's fault.

My question is, would the "Nation" have been screaming like a stuck pig had a center-right government been deposed while attempting to impose a military dictatorship? I think not. If a leftist junta had killed 3,000 rightwingers in Santiago, you wouldn't have heard a peep from the farleft Nation magazine. Among the left, I suppose it all depends on whose ox is being gored.

Castro and Che killed many more than that. But of course, they are on the same side as the Nation.

Pinochet opposed the communists and socialists, so of course the MSM distorts and lies about him...
