FOB GRIZZLY -- Soldiers dedicated the newly built Troop Medical Clinic here in memory of a fallen Soldier from the 382nd Military Police Battalion whom friends remembered for his compassion and dedication.
Army Sergeant First Class Daniel Brozovich, killed in action by an improvised explosive device Oct. 18, was memorialized in a ceremony that officially opened the FOB’s clinic. The upgrade will give troops and caregivers 1,000 more square feet of clinic space.
“This is a really nice setup,” said Army Col. Jeff Clark, commander, 21st Combat Support Hospital, the clinic’s parent organization. “It’s what you all deserve to work in and also what Soldiers deserve to come to.”
The clinic staff consists of 17 medical personnel, including one physician’s assistant and seven health care specialists. This group of dedicated professionals services a population of around 1,000 Soldiers, Marines and Moldovan and Bulgarian Multi-National partners.
The new facility has private exam rooms, a trauma room, indoor plumbing, and a new caregiver friendly layout - all improvements over the previous location, said Capt. Nicolas Aguilar, the FOB’s physician’s assistant.
The clinic has a usual caseload of 60 to 80 patients per week, he said. But with the new centralized location, the staff expects the patient traffic to increase.
“We are able to treat a wide variety of complaints from routine sick-call to emergency medical cases,” Aguilar said. Although the clinic has limited laboratory capabilities and no x-ray, the staff is able to handle more than 90 percent of cases in-house.
The new facility does credit to Brozovich, a Soldier who was always ready to help out a friend, said Capt. Frank Brown, Brozovich’s company commander. A Pennsylvania native, he originally enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1982 and served on active duty as a Marine until 1986. He joined the Pennsylvania National Guard soon after that.
Brozovich was ordered to active duty in July 2002, December 2003, and volunteered in May 2006. As part of the 382nd, Brozovich was noncommissioned officer-In-charge of the reaction team. He was responsible for safely escorting senior personnel within the area of operations, responding to last-minute mission taskings and escorting the explosive ordnance disposal team to improvised explosive device or unexploded ordnance sites.
