I just saw this today (I haven't subscribed to the Post in many years). I didn't see it already posted. My apologies if it's a duplicate.

WGMS -- Classical Music for People who Hate Classical Music. Hopefully WETA will be better.

It's just plain economics. Classical music does not make money. People don't listen to classical music -- and thus, advertisers do not wish to advertise on classical channels. Any station that plays classical is basically doing charity or losing money.
To: sitetest
It will be a good thing if the last radio station takes classical music off the air. Classical music on the radio, interrupted by a "classical DJ" and/or advertisements is nothing but savagery. Recorded classical music is only meant be heard uninterrupted in one's living room in complete darkness, and only on 6 channel surround DVD-audio or Telearc SACDs.

thanks-- I guess it's been about 10 yrs. since WETA went to the alltalk format, right?

The one thing I miss, (besides the Hardtimes Cafe) since I moved from the DC area 4 years ago, is easily accessible classical radio. Good luck to WEAT if they are going all Classical again.

I like classical music, but I only listen to the radio when I'm driving. And it's kind of tough to appreciate the sublime subtlety of a Beethoven symphony when maneuvering I 495. Talk radio works for driving, but not classical music.

90.9 would be just fine, providing its all classical and I dont have to listen to NPR propaganda, too. .

I lived in Arlington 1969 -1971 and listened to WGMS. I remember you could get a Beethoven poster on his birthday if you knocked on the door of their celler studios and intoned the words, "Loodvig sent me" Their style was much better than Milwaukee's snooty WFMR.

I say listen to classical music all you want. Just don't make me pay for it by forcing my *TAX* money out of my wallet and into the NPR trough.

WWFM (Mercer County Community College) in central New Jersey is NPR. Their programming is 100% classical, and there is nearly zero liberal/leftist content. The only annoyance is the occasional BBC 5 minute propaganda segment, and the station breaks are lengthy as they have to list about 20 repeater transmitters around the area. They seem to have no lack of financial support from listeners.

In my neck of the woods WCLV has been the classical station for greater Cleveland since 1964, home of the Cleveland Orchestra, AKA "The Best Band in the Land". It was the only locally owned station in the area, (owned by Seaway Foods if I'm not mistaken), and the big networks started throwing several million dollars at them to buy the frequency and turn the station into another cookie cutter mass marketed steaming flow of audio excrement, so WCLV took the only course possible... they sold out, sort of. They sold out to the Christian radio station that wanted better coverage and more transmitter power, so the two stations swapped frequencies, WCLV got a few odd millions of dollars and formed the WCLV Foundation, which guarantees that the city of Cleveland will have a classical music station broadcasting in perpetuity.
Of course, the new transmitter, located way out in farm country to the west of the city meant that reception on the east side of town became terrible, but, WCLV provides a very nice OGG stream on its web site, and now broadcasts in HD Radio as well, and as soon as I get a new car in a couple of years I'll let you all know how it sounds.
Speaking of streaming audio, I was just listening to a station called SKY FM on Shoutcast last night that I would recommend, and if you have digital cable you can usually find a classical channel or two. In the case of Time-Warner here that means a channel that offers complete symphonic works, a lite classical channel and an opera channel. And, as if that's not enough, don't forget that just about any public library should have a pretty large selection of classical Cd's.
Finally, if you've read this far, please add me to your "Classical Ping List". Thank you.

According to www.dcrtv.com the sale is unraveling. It now looks as if Damn Snyder may buy WBIG 100 from Clear Channel instead.
