New Evidence that Childhood Family Factors Influence Sexual Orientation

COPENHAGEN, November 29, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A major study published last month in the prestigious peer-reviewed journal, Archives of Sexual Behavior, provides striking new evidence for the influence of childhood family factors on sexual-orientation development.

The study used a population-based sample of 2,000,355 native-born Danes between the ages of 18 and 49. Denmark -- a country noted for its tolerance of a wide variety of alternative lifestyles, including homosexual partnerships -- was the first country to legalize gay marriage. The researchers assessed detailed marriage records for all Danish-born men and women marrying a same-sex partner from the years 1989 through 2001.

With access to the "virtually complete registry coverage of the entire Danish population," the study sample therefore lacked the problematic selection bias that has plagued many previous studies on sexual orientation.

Parental Influences on Sexual Orientation Development

The authors conclude: "Our study provides population-based, prospective evidence that childhood family experiences are important determinants of heterosexual and homosexual marriage decisions in adulthood."

Assuming that people who marry heterosexually are almost always heterosexual -- especially in a country where homosexuality carries little stigma, and gay marriage is legal -- and people who marry homosexually can be presumed to be homosexual, the study's findings offer intriguing evidence about family factors separating homosexual from heterosexual persons.

The following are findings from this new data:

- Men who marry homosexually are more likely to have been raised in a family with unstable parental relationships -- particularly, absent or unknown fathers and divorced parents.

- Findings on women who marry homosexually were less pronounced, but were still associated with a childhood marked by a broken family. The rates of same-sex marriage "were elevated among women who experienced maternal death during adolescence, women with short duration of parental marriage, and women with long duration of mother-absent cohabitation with father."

- Men and women with "unknown fathers" were significantly less likely to marry a person of the opposite sex than were their peers with known fathers.

- Men who experienced parental death during childhood or adolescence "had significantly lower heterosexual marriage rates than peers whose parents were both alive on their 18th birthday. The younger the age of the father's death, the lower was the likelihood of heterosexual marriage."

- "The shorter the duration of parental marriage, the higher was the likelihood of homosexual marriage...homosexual marriage rates were 36% and 26% higher among men and women, respectively, who experienced parental divorce after less than six years of marriage, than among peers whose parents remained married for all 18 years of childhood and adolescence."

- "Men whose parents divorced before their 6th birthday were 39% more likely to marry homosexually than peers from intact parental marriages."

- "Men whose cohabitation with both parents ended before age 18 years had significantly (55% -76%) higher rates of homosexual marriage than men who cohabited with both parents until 18 years."

- The mother's age was directly linked to the likelihood of homosexual marriage among men -- the older the mother, the more likely her son was to marry another man. Also, "only children" were more likely to be homosexual.

- Persons born in large cities were significantly more likely to marry a same-sex partner -- suggesting that cultural factors might also affect the development of sexual orientation.

"Whatever ingredients determine a person's sexual preferences and marital choices," conclude the study's authors, "our population-based study shows that parental interactions are important."

(1) Animals can have diseases, deformities and dysfunctional behavior just as humans do.

(2) Animal behavior is always interesting, always worth studying and puzzling about, but is not normative for human behavior. (Otherwise we'll have to accept pervasive male dominance based on threats of bodily harm, rape as courtship behavior, killing cripples, and racism. Not to mention very poor fashion sense.)

(3) Ther are hormones, pheromones, and anatomical and physiological factors which strongly predispose to reproductive behavior. If you don't know that, you don't know much.

(4) Many intensive touching behaviors are related to dominance and bonding, but are not sexual (meaning oriented to genital arousal and release.) Those that are, e.g. those that involve male-on-male penetration and ejaculation, are exceedingly rare due to the role that female pheromones play in mammalian male arousal for a completed sexual act.

I suspect that much of the recent animal "evidence" for homosexuality --- which somehow ecaped the notice of very careful and precise zoologists who have been massively cataloguing animal behavior for lo these many centuries --- is deeply biased by cultural anthropomorphism. The same Beatrix Potter mentality that said "Oh, look, Uncle Penguin has adopted an egg" in the 19th century, would now say just as foolishly, "Oh, look, he's gay."

Now that, right there is the most important statement in the article. When they site divorce, as a major factor, it is important to consider why the divorces happened, which of course is any number of reasons. No question about any kind of abuse is mentioned.

Also interesting since a lot of socialist countries are saying fathers are not important or not needed. This article certainly says otherwise.

So the study basically confirms what everyone who ever studied it KNEW until the APA decided to play politics and drop Homosexuality from the DSM IV, not because new evidence proved it shouldn't be there, oh no.. all evidence still pointed to the fact it should... but to placate a political group.

Homosexuality is mental disorder manefested as a BEHAVIOR, most often self destructively. Its not a right, civil or otherwise.

Some Children who grow up without the relationship to a same sex role model and mentor (read parent) during their formative years crave the attention of their own gender, and never get past mentally the stage most deal with in adolecense (desire for acceptance among peers)... and will do anything to get and retain the attention and a relationship with persons of their own gender as a result... The end result, particularly in men, perpetual adolecense and homosexual activity.

The sad thing is, entire generations of children have had to be corrupted to prove what humanity had already known for thousands of years.

The more screwed up their childhood was the more likely they are to be screwed up as adults."

Perfect synopsis.

Yes, it is. It's too bad some people will ignore the obvious. Sigh. We can hope... and keep talking about it as much as possible.

Imagine that. A scientific study that also makes common sense. What is this world coming to?

The whole article. Homosexuality has nothing to do with anyone's family situation.

Notice how "orientation" is the word to describe sexual behavior.

Orientation was substituted for PREFERENCE because even this study is assuming that sexual behavior is a status which becomes hard wired. Of course then this means people with other sexual fetishes are also hard wired.

On a lighter note: Isn't this the country with a brothel which has farm animals for sexual encounters?

Study is relevant because it shows a correlation beyond mere chance that homosexual behavior tends toward certain environmental factors.

It is relevant because they did not select the pool to a few but use a LARGE pool.

It is not the family situation per se, it is a learned behavior from environment. IOW this further disproves the gene myth for homsoexuals. Homosexuality is a learned sexual fetish.

The study is not relevant. If I posted an article showing completely different information, you wouldn't believe it, would you? The study is only relevant to you because it shows the information you wanted to see. Homosexuality is neither a sexual fetish nor a learned behavior.

as I stated, it shows correlation but that is not causation.

The cause may be the fact that broken families have a higher abuse incidence.

perhaps you should check out the rest of the homosexualagenda ping refernces. Via some conditioning, like other sexual deviations from the norm, the orgasm becomes associated with members of the same sex.

Homosexuality is only about sex. It is just another sexual fetish. It is a learned behavior.

The people here disect studies very well and not not suspectable to homosexual propaganda efforts like those over with the DUmies.

I don't know why you're so insistent on trying to change my mind. You're not going to, you never will. And, no, I'd rather not check out the "homosexual agenda" articles. I generally try to avoid these threads like the plague because I know how people on this forum react when I disagree with them about homosexuals/homosexuality.

Your position on the matter has absolutely no scientific support. In fact science is quite hostile to your position. What longtermmemmory posted is supported by science.

Some facts to ponder:
