As 2006 draws to a close you will doubtless be hearing a lot of jeremiads on how things are running down, running out and generally not as good as they used to be.
In truth, however, I cannot end the year - and with it my regular weekly column -- on a pessimistic note. Yes, the Iraq war seems a mess; yes, government still spends too much money badly; and yes, the culture ain't what it used to be. But if you think things look bleak now, you weren't around when I started writing a column in the early 1980s.

We don't need no stinkin' excuses. Let 2007 be a year of great victory. You can't control the idiots in Iran, you can't control the jerk-offs in DC, but you can control you.

In 2007, the Marxists in congress will slide down the moonbeams, swords in hand and propeller beanie hat on head, to expose themselves as lunatics and moonbats. It's their nature.
The approval rate of congress will be below that of used car salesmen.
When I started paying attention during impeachment, Washington looked to me like Versailles during the reign of Louis XVI. All of the women had extreme coiffures. The men wore tuxes to formal events. Now, I read the Happy Days are here again and a coronation is planned for Nancy Pelosi. We have royals without pedigrees who are celebrated by a self-appointed elite no one respects.
Great article--thanks. I think some of the "glass half empty" folks around here merely lack an historical perspective. I remember the early '80s, the days when America was on a steep decline and the Japanese were going to rule the world. Now it's the Chinese and Islam that will rule the world. Not hardly. We're Americans, and we'll find a way as we always have.
Al Gore has attacked the Iraq war as "the worst strategic mistake in the entire history of the United States," and maybe he will turn out to be right - though one wonders what he makes of the decision to send troops into Vietnam, where 47,000 of them were killed. Predictions that the fiscal deficit and the trade deficit could bring an economic reckoning may turn out to be correct, too.
Doesn't seem too optimistic to me.
I love a new year. Things can only get better for the Republicans, Conservatives and Country. We have a great opportunity to really work hard this year preparing for the 2008 election. I know that in the past Republicans tend to squander their good fortune, but I sincerely hope that 7 November was a wake up call for them and currently they are still shocked and depressed about the loss and after the New Year they pick themselves up and work hard through 2007 and into 2008.
This author makes good points. This election resembled that of 1982, which was event-driven, not a political realignment.
