Blizzard warning in Colo., N.M. digs out ( Global Warming ? )
, Associated Press ^ | 12-20-06 | JON SARCHE

A major snowstorm blew across Colorado toward the Plains on Wednesday, canceling hundreds of airline flights for holiday travelers and shutting down major highways in parts of four states.

The National Weather Service posted blizzard warnings for most of eastern Colorado and adjoining sections of Nebraska and Kansas.

A day earlier, the storm had pummeled New Mexico with up to a foot of snow.

Two feet of snow was possible in the foothills just west of Denver, with 2 to 3 feet a possibility farther north.

Up to 20 inches could accumulate on the Plains of eastern Colorado and wind up to 30 mph could pile the snow into high drifts...

"I'm going to grab my computer, talk to my boss and go back home,"... "I'm not going to take a risk and get stuck in Denver."

United Airlines, the busiest carrier at Denver International Airport, canceled more than 630 flights ...

Police closed Interstate 70 for more than 250 miles from just east of Denver to Colby, Kan., and sections of I-80 along a 140-mile stretch from Cheyenne, Wyo., to Big Springs, Neb...

"Crashes are beginning to occur," said Mary Jo Hall of the Nebraska Department of Roads.

Travelers stalled by the closures had already started filling Kansas motels during the morning, said Stan Whitley, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

Truckers were pulling off I-80 at Ogallala, Neb. "Our parking lot is pretty small, but they're just kind of parked off on the streets," said cashier Michelle Krauter at the Sapp Brothers truck stop.

Scores of schools were closed, along with many courthouses in eastern Colorado.

Global warming is an observable, like the sunrise. The anthropogenic contribution is arguable. Consider the metabolism of the largest specific mass on Earth; their GH gas output dwarf's humanity's.

Either we are equal or we are not. Good people ought to be armed where they will, with wits and guns. Merry Christmas

Always wear the best extreme cold weather boots you can get. waterproof or water resistant (at least) shells over layers of clothing. And have a case of those little chemical (sawdust and other stuff) hand and foot warmers. Take drinking water, food and extreme cold weather sleeping bags.

...and snowboards (with helmets, motocross protective gear and first aid kits for backcountry)!

Army extreme cold weather survival training helps, too.

And walking after dark without a light, look behind you every few seconds (scares stalking lions away--no kidding).

I tried opening our front door about 30 minutes ago, no go. We have a 12" step at our front door too.

This is wild.

It was bad from ABQ north and east until around noon time. I-25 shut down within the city limits until 11 a.m. and I-40 from ABQ to the Texas state line until about the same time. The latest ABQ radar still shows snow in the ABQ area and to the NE with a winter storm warning continuing into the evening.

Look at the photo below to see the extent of the storm:

The long wait has begun at Denver International Airport where hundreds of passengers are starting to stake out a "soft" place to spend the night as virtually all of the airlines have cancelled flights this afternoon.

Long lines wrap around the terminal with people standing at Frontier, United, Continental and other airline counters hoping to change their flights for today to something tomorrow — or later.

Standing next to the wall, Jeremy Carter, 17, of Houston, who spent the last five days skiing Breckenridge, shook his head and said, "I don't like snow anymore" after finding he’d have to wait until Sunday to get a plane home.

Trevor Danfill, 39, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, a directional driller for an oil company, flew in this morning from Little Rock, got stuck and couldn’t get a hotel because they’re all booked up.

It didn’t matter because he couldn’t get an airport shuttle to take him to one anyway.

...I went through Durango (back in May of this year). Couldn't believe the changes in the last few years.

Tell me about it. I lived there for 13 years starting in '92 and the change I witnessed in that short amount of time was astounding. I moved to northern Utah a few months ago.

We got it bad this AM. Route 40 through NM was closed from Albuquerque to Amarillo until noon. About 18" in the mountains east of Albuquerque where I am. Still coming down.

Yeah, our family moved to the Durango area in the early 70's. I basically lived in the area till around 1988, when my wife and I moved to Canon City. We moved back to Durango in 1992 and were there till we moved to Nebraska in '98. I don't get back as often as I would like to, so the changes were a real shock (didn't have the benefit of seeing them happen gradually).

I'm going through Utah on my way to western Wyoming. Weather supposed to be clear but cold.

I'm in Hyrum, about 30 miles south of the Idaho border. My wife and I were thinking about visiting her sister in SD and her brother, who has a ranch in SW Wyoming. Changed our minds about that.

If you think you'll find yourself in the area on your way, let me know in a freepmail. Our place is a nice stopover location on the trip to Wyoming.

Merry Christmas.
