Blizzard warning in Colo., N.M. digs out ( Global Warming ? )
, Associated Press ^ | 12-20-06 | JON SARCHE

A major snowstorm blew across Colorado toward the Plains on Wednesday, canceling hundreds of airline flights for holiday travelers and shutting down major highways in parts of four states.

The National Weather Service posted blizzard warnings for most of eastern Colorado and adjoining sections of Nebraska and Kansas.

A day earlier, the storm had pummeled New Mexico with up to a foot of snow.

Two feet of snow was possible in the foothills just west of Denver, with 2 to 3 feet a possibility farther north.

Up to 20 inches could accumulate on the Plains of eastern Colorado and wind up to 30 mph could pile the snow into high drifts...

"I'm going to grab my computer, talk to my boss and go back home,"... "I'm not going to take a risk and get stuck in Denver."

United Airlines, the busiest carrier at Denver International Airport, canceled more than 630 flights ...

Police closed Interstate 70 for more than 250 miles from just east of Denver to Colby, Kan., and sections of I-80 along a 140-mile stretch from Cheyenne, Wyo., to Big Springs, Neb...

"Crashes are beginning to occur," said Mary Jo Hall of the Nebraska Department of Roads.

Travelers stalled by the closures had already started filling Kansas motels during the morning, said Stan Whitley, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

Truckers were pulling off I-80 at Ogallala, Neb. "Our parking lot is pretty small, but they're just kind of parked off on the streets," said cashier Michelle Krauter at the Sapp Brothers truck stop.

Scores of schools were closed, along with many courthouses in eastern Colorado.

I know enough about Evanston to know why you say "West of what?" My daughter and her husband are stuck there for 3 years in a lucrative computer software/graphic design contract with a phone company. It will be worth the sacrifice. Kidding her, I said "just slap your neck twice each morning and you will fit in". Merry Christmas and thanks.

I just saw a flash on 9news that RTD has canceled bus routes (I thought I heard them say starting at 6). Earlier today I heard the RTD spokesperson bragging about using RTD instead of driving, and I mumbled to myself: yeah, and what do you do when they cancel their bus routes and you are stranded.

Yes - a couple of months ago I put together a list of all the Boulder area Freepers I could find, but I didn't do much else with it. Wanted to form a Fifth Column in the People's Republic. We'll have to meet at Texas Stakehouse one day for some beer and red meat.

In the spring, with the new calves, getting this type of a storm can be deadly.

Ah! I'm glad that you're not stuck at DIA! It's probably looking about like the bar scene in that first Star Wars movie about now! From the looks of all of the hysteria (news) below the Range, it's safer on the Range, IMO. ...time for a little walk outside here.

The mayor should set up a convoy every few hours with multiple plows, cops in suv's, buses...to allow some of the folks who have hotel reservations to get out.

Glad to hear that some stuff is going in.

The mayor should also try to convoy Nobel trucks with food in , too.

Well, I don't like to rub it in, but I am sitting here in sunny Phoenix by the pool...too cold to swim of course ;)
My son has been sending me photos of the snow in RR. I would say I miss it, but since I grew up in CO, I haven't missed snow a single day since I left!

We are so bad. We have 9news on tv, in HD, and streaming 850 on the computer. Some guy called into the radio station awhile ago ripping on Hickenlooper, about how poorly he handled the election. He also claimed it wasn't that big of a storm and that the news didn't have any reporters out on the streets.

He was so nutty, he couldn't be taken seriously.

But, I love your idea. If the travelers are stranded, hopefully someone is making an effort to get support out to them.

Didn't have a camera ready, but someone was just cross-country skiing down my street. That's a good way to finish up the Christmas shopping today.

I just spoke with my son. He is heading west on I-70 and was about to cross I-25. It has taken him an hour to go 3 miles. Hope everyone is safe. At least the going is slow. RTD is mostly a joke.

Let's compare weather again in July. Maybe after I've spent a day off Trail Ridge Road.

If it weren't for the many different driving styles in the cities down there,... Most roads on the Range get plowed and sanded in spots. We drive over a few miles of unplowed, unsanded, paved road with an inch or two of ice on it for a few days every year, and there are no problems there. All of the long-term neighbors are accustomed to driving on it.

Let's compare weather again in July.

I was waiting for someone to mention that...however, I will be back in NM before the heat sets in here...have a son there and daughters here and will be "snowbirding".
