Ex-candidate to surrender law licenses (WI State Sen. Dem. ex-candidate Donovan Riley)

Donovan Riley, a disgraced state Senate candidate, is paying a steep price for voting twice in the same election in 2000.

Riley agreed on Thursday to pay a $10,000 fine, surrender his law licenses in Wisconsin and Illinois and not practice law. He must also return campaign contributions to supporters who request refunds in the next 30 days even if it means paying them from his personal funds.

He has 45 days to meet those conditions. In exchange, the single count of election fraud, voting more than once, will be reduced to a misdemeanor. The deal, under which Riley avoids jail time, was reached in a plea bargain with Waukesha County District Attorney Paul Bucher, Riley and Riley's attorney, Jeremy P. Levinson.

Riley on Thursday entered a plea of no contest to the felony count, but the guilty finding will be withheld for 45 days. If Riley fails any of the conditions, he will become a felon, Bucher said. If the conditions are satisfied, Riley will be found guilty of a misdemeanor.

Donovan Riley was caught voting twice in the Nov. 2000 Presidential election, once in the town of Oconomowoc here in Wisconsin, once in Chicago. This revelation caused him to drop out of a state Senate race, to which he had been recruited to Lieberman the incumbent moderate Dem. Despite dropping out, he still received 25% of the vote, mainly because the district includes the East Side of Milwaukee and the UW-Milwaukee campus. At the same time, an honest-to-goodness DINO was running in another 'RAT primary, which caused some crossover of conservatives to the 'RAT primaries.

As for the "steep price", while losing the law license in both Wisconsin and Illinois and $10,000 in fines (the maximum), plus the potential to have to repay approximately $30,000 in campaign contributions, are indeed steep, the fact that the charge is going to be reduced to a misdemeanor is very disturbing. That leaves him eligible to run for public office in the future, something that a felony conviction would preclude.

Vote fraud should be a capital offense.

Vote fraud should be a capital offense.

Should be, but instead, Donovan "Double-vote like a 'Rat" Riley likely will be my state Senator in 4 years if he chooses to stick around and run (yep, I'm stuck in that district thanks to gerrymandering).

The eventual winner of the race, Democrat Jeff Plale continues to draw the ire of constituents here in my district because of all things, he has the gall of being pro-life.

His colleague to the south, Christine Sinicki is a full-on communist who believes her will is the will of "the people." When she isn't busy harassing people about their propery, err I mean their public green space, she's ranting incoherently about abortion and other issues that from my perspective don't seem to involve her.

Its telling that folks continued to support a felon-to-be, and one with a background in public school administration to boot, over a man (Plale) who impresses me as thoughtful, respectful, rational and civic minded.

The grassroots of the Democratic party at work in the Socialist worker's paradise of Milwaukee.

Not if you can get the hell out of here before then. I'll be right behind you.

That would be "north" or "west" (depending on where in the 7th you start). "South" is about to be somebody who thinks Wisconsin isn't a tax hell and who ran as such a mere 10 years after the Miller Park sales tax vote cost George Petak that seat.

And now you've Congresswoman Moore, mother of the election day tire slashers being talked about as a possible candidate for Mayor of Milwaukee. I'd call the whole state of city politics a farce but doing so would imply that there is an element of humor in our sad state.

And Double-Vote Riley isn't about to become a felon (at least unless he doesn't cough up the cash). He'll be back, and he'll win against Plale in 2010. Heck, he might be drafted to take out Tim Carpenter in 2008.
