December 25, 2006 -- Uri Dan, The Post's Mideast correspondent in war and uneasy peace for the past quarter-century, died of lung cancer in Tel Aviv yesterday at 71.

The author of more than a dozen books on the Middle East, Dan - who would always greet Post colleagues with a warm "Hello, my friend" - also wrote for the Israeli newspapers Maariv and The Jerusalem Post, and was a regular on Israel Radio's daily "It's All Talk."

His blind devotion to Ariel Sharon marred what should have been a fine record of unwavering right-wing support for Israel.

Regardless, he will be missed.

I am very sorry to hear this. His devotion to Sharon is to be admired. Whatever Sharon's faults, Israel would be better off now with him at the helm at the moment. Of that there is no doubt, IMO. I will the moral clarity and wisdom (and humor) of Uri Dan's columns.

I remember reading Uri Dan's dispatches in the NY Post even 25 years ago. He got around. Rest in peace Uri!

I would speculate that maybe Sharon had a ministroke some time before the big one, which would explain why he went off the rails and left Israel in the hands of Olmert.

In any case, Rest in Peace to Uri Dan.

Blessed are You, HaShem, our G-d, King of the Universe,
the true Judge.

Rest in peace, Uri Dan. I hope that your family can find comfort in your accomplishments, in the outpouring of sympathy, and in the time that you were able to spend with him.
