Muslims ask to worship at Cordoba More than a million of Spain's 44 million inhabitants are Muslims [GALLO/GETTY]

Spanish Muslims have written to the Vatican to demand the right to worship at Cordoba Cathedral.

Spain's Islamic Board wrote to Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday, calling on him to grant them permission to worship in the cathedral, parts of which were built as a mosque during Spain's period of Islamic rule.

The group said in their letter: "What we wanted was not to take over that holy place, but to create in it, together with you and other faiths, an ecumenical space unique in the world which would have been of great significance in bringing peace to humanity."

They said that senior Spanish Catholic clergy had earlier rejected requests for Muslims to be allowed to prostrate themselves inside the Cathedral.

Mansur Escudero, the board's secretary general, said security guards often stop Muslim worshipers from praying at the old mosque.

He said: "There are reactionary elements within the Catholic Church, and when they hear about the construction of a mosque, or Muslim teachings in state schools, or about veils, they see it as a sign we are growing and they oppose it."

Mansur said Muslims came from around the world to see Cordoba's Cathedral, which is still commonly known as the Cathedral-Mosque.

Are they asking (like the headline implies) or demanding, like the sentence below illustrates?

"Spanish Muslims have written to the Vatican to demand the right to worship at Cordoba Cathedral."

I would call them the common sense elements within the Catholic Church.

Ferdinand & Isabella, in 1492, came with a workable solution - and the Inquisition was entrusted with mopping up.

Okay I going to put my knee-jerk pants on:

I propose that Spain sends back the imported Muslim to North Africa. To make up for the loss of work-force they should take in our illegal Mexican immigrants.

Problems solved: 1) Fewer illegals in the US
2) No Muzzies in Spain
3) Spanish-speaking, culturally related
immigrants in Spain

Sounds reasonable, as soon as they return the Hagia Sophia, the Church of St. John the Baptist in Damascus, and various other Churches turned into Mosques to free Christian worship.

A very long time ago I learned the first rule of translating Spanish or Arabic into English ~ IGNORE the name-calling, inappropriate use of harsh language, and the expressions that sound like they are being purposefully officious or obnoxious.

Doesn't mean they aren't being that way, but you'll never figure out what they are talking about if you get hung up on the attitude stuff.

Here I don't know if this simply a couple of bad back to back translations or the correct use of what English speaking people mean by demand.

Just send them a nice note on official stationary that reads, "We will be glad to honor your request. Please inform us when the Muslims you represent desire to worship. At this time, we can only offer our services to men and women simultaneously."

Problem solved.

Let me guess. It's the fourth most holy place in Islam. Holy enough to kill for.
