If I'm not mistaken, Ronaldus Magnus cut off all aid and assistance after one of Saddam's MiGs put an Exocet into the USS Stark in 86-87(?).

I'm pretty sure you're right. He was also an unwilling ally after that, too. I always wondered why we quit the Kuwait war within spitting distance of Baghdad. Then I heard that Bush (#1) thought it was more prudent to keep him in power and let him keep Iran in line than it was for us to do it. Probably seemed like a good idea at the time.
