Hurricane fears cool New Year parties

Extreme Weather caused havoc across the country yesterday, disrupting plans for New Year celebrations tonight.
Up in smoke: Edinburghs Hogmanay celebrations have already started, but 80mph winds are forecast
Gales toppled trees in Staffordshire, killing an 18-year-old woman in a caravan. Hurricane-force winds of 80mph have been forecast for parts of the UK today, casting doubt on whether celebrations will go ahead as planned. Liverpool Council has pulled the plug on a firework display, with Birmingham and Leeds councils threatening to do the same. Local authorities in Cardiff, Newcastle, Edinburgh and London are also monitoring the weather closely.
Barry Gromett of the Met Office said that the worst-affected areas will be Northern Ireland, northern England, southern Scotland and north Wales, all of which could experience winds of up to 80mph. "Unfortunately the winds will impact on the Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh," he said, adding that the worst winds in Scotland's capital city are expected to be between 8pm and 10pm tonight.
A final decision on whether Edinburgh's New Year celebrations will go ahead will be made later today.
Blighmy !
I hate it when this happens.
Seems fitting, being that New Years is the Day After Tomorrow.
When did the Brits start quoting windspeeds in Miles Per Hour?? Just when our weather folks are switching to Kilometers Per Hour, to have that Euro panache, the issue is becoming confused.
Doesn't the UK have that huge underground city they built during ww2 (the biggest bomb shelter in the world) that they could use? No need to cancel a party just because it's a bit windy. It would be a great party, no wind, and no worries of rain. It could the biggest "outdoor" underground street party the UK has ever seen.
Can Looter Guy be far behind?
Plus, you can have hurricane force winds without it being a hurricane. The term, "hurricane" has a very thorough definition and this one doesn't qualify.
"When did the Brits start quoting windspeeds in Miles Per Hour??"
When they borrowed our tesla toy which had mph gages?
Maybe they should just cancel 2007.
I think the biggest was under Moscow...maybe Beijing now.
Yup. let's get NautiNurse over here.
Good! LOL.
