As we approach the close of 2006, we turn with fondness to our memories of the failed criminals, thwarted robberies, and foiled home invasions as we take a state-by-state look at 2006: An Armed Citizen Year in Review.
Alabama: Six Alabama armed citizens
Alaska: Two Alaska armed citizens
Arizona: Four Arizona armed citizens
Arkansas: Four Arkansas armed citizens
California: Twenty-three California armed citizens
Colorado: Three Colorado armed citizens
Connecticut: 0
Delaware: 0
DC: 0
Florida: Twenty-five: Florida armed citizens
Georgia: Seven Georgia armed citizens
Hawaii: 0
Idaho: Two Idaho armed citizens
Illinois: Six Illinois armed citizens
Indiana: Nine Indiana armed citizens
Iowa: 0
Kansas: One Kansas armed citizen
Kentucky: Three Kentucky armed citizens
Louisiana: Six Louisiana armed citizens
Maine: One Maine armed citizen
Maryland: Three Maryland armed citizen
Massachusetts: 0
Michigan: Three Michigan armed citizens
Minnesota: Five Minnesota armed citizens
Mississippi: Six Mississippi armed citizens
Missouri: Four Missouri armed citizens
Montana: 0
Nebraska: 0
Nevada: Two Nevada armed citizens
New Hampshire: One New Hampshire armed citizen)
New Jersey: Two New Jersey armed citizens
New Mexico: Two New Mexico armed citizens
New York: Five New York armed citizens
North Carolina: Sixteen North Carolina armed citizens
North Dakota: 0
Ohio: Sixteen Ohio armed citizens
Oklahoma: Seven Oklahoma armed citizens
Oregon: Two Oregon armed citizens
Pennsylvania: Ten Pennsylvania armed citizens
Rhode Island: 0
South Carolina: Seven South Carolina armed citizens

Utah: One Utah armed citizens
Vermont: 0
Virginia: Two Virginia armed citizens
Washington: Six Washington armed citizens
West Virginia: One West Virginia armed citizen
Wisconsin: Four Wisconsin armed citizens
Wyoming: One Wyoming armed citizen
And the winner by a Texas mile is...Texas! With 41 armed citizen stories published on Free Republic this year, there's no question the Lone Star state wins this contest.
Florida won Second Place with 25, with California's 23 registering in Third.
These stories are only the stories from this year, 2006, containing the state initials plus "armedcitizen" in the keyword. Research shows us this is less than a tithe of the examples of defense that citizens use firearms for.
Clearly, Dixie overall is ahead of the rest of the country in terms of citizens refusing to be victims.
Overall, it was a good year. Obviously, some of us would much rather our states did better. Make sure you keep an eye on your local papers, tv and radio news, and if you spot a story, send it on!
Congratulations to Texas, and thanks to everyone who has already sent stories along. It's been a great 2006, and we'll be back with even more stories in 2007!

Thanks Dave. Happy New Year!

Sunday, December 31, 2006 A peaceful end to the year in Longview was interrupted by gunfire late Friday that left one person dead and a second in critical condition. George Edward Sanders, 25, of Longview died from gunshot wounds, and Charles Parker, 24, also of Longview, was taken into emergency surgery at Good Shepherd Medical Center. Parker was shot at least one time, and his condition late Saturday was listed as critical, police and hospital officials said. Police were called to a Georgia Lane residence at 11:29 p.m. after getting a report that two men and one woman had forced their way into the home, demanding money. Police say multiple shots were fired by the suspect and someone else at the Georgia Lane address during a struggle. Several of the suspects, including Sanders, fled. Police received a second call about gunshots at Hidden Hills Apartments, on Gilmer Road, near Georgia Lane. Police found Sanders lying in the driveway at the apartment complex and determined that he was one of the suspects from the shooting on Georgia Lane, police said. No other suspects had been identified late Saturday; however, Parker was identified as a resident at the Georgia Lane address, police said.
You have done a great job on this issue and thanks!
However, I don't understand this statement.
"Clearly, Dixie overall is ahead of the rest of the country in terms of citizens refusing to be victims."
I thought it was Texas?

Texas won the individual state race. I'm just making a personal observation that Dixie fares better overall. The Carolinas, Tennessee, Florida...pretty much the lower right-hand sector of the country. There are a few outliers, Pennsylvania, California and so forth. Ohio.
Of course, that could just be less media interest in reporting such incidents, but there are a lot of sad New England states with a big 'ol goose egg right next to 'em.

For the purposes of this report, we in "Dixie" grant honorary membership to the state of Texas.
Libertarian ping! To be added or removed from my ping list freepmail me or post a message here.
So, Michigan residents got credit for protecting people in three other states? Yay Michigan! Even though our economy sucks! And our governor is horrible! Tigers are good now, so it's all ok! Even though Lions are worse than the governor! Go Tigers!
Even thought Texas won and I'm here, I'm disappointed in Alaska with only two armed citizens. Then again, there's a lot of land in Alaska.
And, I'll bet a lot of shovels.
Just for that I'm going to sell so many guns in 2007 that I'll even make Jeb Bush take notice.
Pah!
And a great job with the pings and indexing, DLR! Thanks for a great year and Don't Mess With Texas!
We appreciate the offer but Texas stands alone. No matter what you cannot beat Southern living!
Just finished a big bowl of black-eyed peas and ham. Good luck for the coming year.
Thanks again Dave.

Nice flag graphics Dave!!!
thanks. Happy New Year

does not represent this Californian.

This is more like it.
Dave, You did not include the case in Annpolis Mall in Maryland where the Secret Service agent shot back at a teenager that was involved in a fight.
Perhaps since it was a secret service agent you did not think it qualified. But it did happen on his off time while he was with his family.

Secret Service agent wounded when he tries to stop fight.
At least four people were shot at the crowded Annapolis mall last night, including an off-duty Secret Service agent who opened fire on a teen involved in a food court gunfight.
At least six shots rang out just after 7:15 p.m. near the Cingular wireless store in the Westfield Annapolis mall, police and witnesses said, sending hordes of panicked shoppers running for cover.
The gunfire erupted after a group of young men started fighting with another young man, said Officer Sara Schriver, a county police spokesman. The Secret Service agent, who was at the mall with his family, tried to break it up, she said.
One person in the group pulled out a gun - possibly a revolver - and shot the agent, police said. The wounded agent fired back and was able hit the assailant.

You have the blurb wrong for Minnesota.
Wow, I'll say!
Nice pic, JV.
Here is my daughter at 14 years old.
Happy New Year Dave and ALL!
Just putting the finishing touches on the black-eyes & hocks up here. Cornbread on the hoof, greens ready to steam. Stolie in the freezer, beer out on the deck. Locked and prepared to get loaded.
Happy New Year all you Eakers. Made it through another one mostly unscathed. You too, Gunner. Be safe.
Hey DrGunsforHands, At least the Lions can get better and our Gov can only when she moves back across the border.
Happy New Year eh
Happy New Year to you too Brother!
ca tally of 23 despite most ca politicians and LEO prefer making it impossible/illegal for responsible, law abiding citizens to arm themselves in self defense.
We also need a counter for the number of citizens murdered in cities and states that prohibit them from being armed.
You are only counting stories that were posted on FR though, right?
One more facelift and she can tour with ZZ Top......
Thankfully, Michigan has term limits. And I'm not sure I really wanted Devos for governor. The whole thing with Amway switching its factory work to Manpower temp. workers really bothers me. Don't want our economy to end up running on Manpower. And good point about Lions doing awful is that they get good draft picks. Lets hope they use them this year.
I'm proud of just being a Texan, the armed citizen thing is a plus. AZ totals may be low due to their "Open Carry" law, sure wish we had one.
Not sure if we're highest 'cause we have a target rich environment (more scumbags) or due to our right to protect property . Texas really leads the way here. Most states you gotta threaten my life before I can pop you, in Texas I can drill you for stealing my pink flamingos out of the yard.
Those who would disarm us are blind to the numbers of crimes which are deterred, and the suffering which does not happen, because criminals are afraid of citizens with guns.
Is cornbread considered a condiment???
I made "Wife Unit" fetch a box of it fer tomorrow...
We need all the help we can get...;-)
great effort to do this tally
thanks for the pings, Happy New Year
What ever it takes to get it cooked!
Have a safe New Years Steve.
Ironic that Vermont, which requires no permit for concealed carry, has no incidents. WAIT, it's not ironic at all :)
No, Michigan had three stories of self-defense (documented on FR) this year. In Michigan.
daveloneranger, great recordkeeping! Well done. Thanks for keeping us informed.
I can't be for sure, but I'm guessing factors like the number of reporters, population, the fact that a lot of them carry guns, and perhaps that incidents of confrontation may go unreported more often. It would be things like this that make me think states like Montana and Nebraska also have similar excuses.
-bflr-
Oo, thanks. I imagine the mods are all out drinking, but maybe I can catch one of them before they shut out the light. ;-)
This is correct. Other sources have caught more stories, and even they didn't catch them all. So this should be considered a representative number, a token of the actual events.
I noticed that. They're one big gun rights exception up there. It's probably a media conspiracy to make us think it doesn't work. :-)
Fixed. You forgot to change Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Oregon too. :-)
Copy-pasting the URL code was open season for some missed edits. Thanks for proof-reading, and a happy new year to you all!
