Every "moderate" Muslim is but one impassioned mullah's sermon separated from becoming a murderous jihadist. The plain words of The Prophet, as recorded in the Koran, can be used to incite every Muslim to the central task of destroying "infidels."
I believe the U. S. Army's first major combat experience with Muslim fighters occurred duriing the Phillipine Insurrection, ca. 1899-1902. An interesting account is given in "The Regulars: The American Army," by Edward M. Coffman, The Belknapp Press of Harvard Univ. Press, Cambridge 2004.
