Message from the North Dakota County Emergency Manager
1-3-07 | NDEM

Posted on 01/03/2007 2:31:16 PM PST by Bob J

This text is from a county emergency manager out in the Western part of North Dakota State after the recent snow storm.

WEATHER BULLETIN

Up here in the Northern Plains we just recovered from a Historic event--- may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" --- with a historic blizzard of up to 44" inches of snow and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to 10's of thousands.

FYI:

George Bush did not come.

FEMA did nothing.

No one howled for the government.

No one blamed the government.

No one even uttered an expletive on TV.

Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit.

Our Mayor's did not blame Bush or anyone else. Our Governor did not blame Bush or anyone else either

CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX, or NBC did not visit - or report on this category 5 snow storm nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards.

No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House.

No one looted.

Nobody - I mean Nobody demanded the government do something.

Nobody expected the government to do anything either.

No Larry King, No Katie Couric, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera.

No Sean Penn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be found.

And

Nope, we just melted the snow for water.

Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of snow-engulfed cars.

The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask for a penny.

Local restaurants made food, and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snow bound families.

Families took in the stranded people - total strangers.

We Fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns.

We put on an extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work or Die".

We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for 'sittin at home' checks.

Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early, we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.

"In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 48 degrees North Latitude, 90% of the world's social problems evaporate."

It does seem that way, at least to me.

I hope this gets passed on..

Maybe . SOME people will get the message . The world does Not owe you a living.

I would put this in 'breaking news,' but that's just me.

There is a lot of truth in this letter. However I would hesitate to imply that everyone in the South is a "sittin at home check" Katrina victim.

It's not your LATITUDE, it's your ATTITUDE.

Ii was the same in South Florida after Hurricane Andrew. We did have the National Guard down there to help with the looting and food and water distribution, but for the most part people just dug in, helped each other, and began to rebuild our community. There were no Network Anchors or National news Reporters there crying the blues and trying to build a reputation on our collective losses. And there was no blaming the Govt for our loss. People just dug in and started working to get our lives back period.

In North Dakota, if your car breaks down by the side of the road (especially in winter), the very next car will stop for you.

We take care of our own.

People work two jobs at minimum wage to make ends meet, and don't complain about it.

Nobody is rude, because you're happy to see another human being (there not being too many), and they are probably armed.

I've only been flipped off by people with Minnesota plates.

We don't have traffic.

Hunting is world-class.

It's 40 degrees today in January (G-d Bless Global Warming!)

I think I'll go home on my never-any-traffic-commute and spend some time with my family.

One of the pleasantly surprising things about living in the Dakotas is that people do help each other, and other than the farmers, people take pride in taking care of themselves.

My brother was at a family reunion in SoDak and locked his keys in the trunk. The word went out and sure enough someones Buick keys fit his trunk...that is not the only story of hospitality I hear out those states..North and South Dakota, good people live there.....

I was born and raised in MN, sorry Brad Cloven about Minnesotans given you the bird (more than likely a liberal)

I think 48° is way the hell up by Grand Forks, meaning it would be a dig to a lot of North Dakotans as well.

The people with MN plates who are flipping you off are most likely from Minneapolis and Duluth. They're probably not any nicer to people from outstate MN.

LOL. Have you considered pre-emptively flipping off any Minnesota drivers you come across?
