Some lawmakers say Mr. Bush has not submitted the agreement because it would get caught up in the debate over Social Security's poor fiscal health, which could doom the measure.

Not to mention giving SS retirement benefits to 20+ million Mexican illegal aliens.

Then there's the whole, paying US SS benefits to Mexican illegal aliens' dependants who've never stepped foot in the USA.

It also takes those working in Mexico 24 YEARS to qualify for benefits, as opposed to, what, 2 and 1/2 years (10 quarters) here. This is an unprecedented, one-way giveaway and a betrayal of Americans.

You wish.

According to the terms of Bush's Totalization agreement, the Mexican illegal alien only has to work 6 quarters (18 months) legally, or illegally, before they're eligible to apply for themselves as well as their Mexican (national) wife and Mexican (national) children, even if the children have never stepped foot in the USA.

US citizens (you and I) have to work at at least 40 quarters (10 years) before we're eligible to apply.

I'm sorry if you didn't realize this is done with other countries.

This is irrelevant. With the nations you mention it's a two way street. Italy (for example) helps cover some of a US citizen's SS when this citizen works there. The reverse also holds true. In all cases the work is done by legal workers

But with Mexico (according to this plan) it will be US paying billions of SS dollars to illegal aliens Mexicans who worked here. How many Americans work in Mexico compared to the millions of illegal alien Mexicans who work here? There is no comparison. Mexico will pay a few million dollars per year in SS patents to the few Americans who work there

Actually, that is interesting. I had a construction business that had major problems with worker's comp fraud and I discovered that basically the State almost encourages this...apparently job security for government workers. So I wonder what the situation is with an illegal...do they qualify for worker's comp? Some of our ex-employees basically had a life-time guaranteed income from this - went skiing on it, had side jobs...all courtesy of our outrageous premiums.

and be guaranteed to receive Social Security benefits as long as they live, even if they return to their home country.

Great googley moogley! What could be the possible argument for this?

Iran has an agreement too. I know this, because ex-inlaws of my sister, are getting FULL benefits with their work record from Iran...

Considering many of them (reconquistas) already consider this IS their homeland, perhaps it won't matter...if they're given amnesty, they are made citizens. Then they can retire where ever they like...I think they just have to return back to the states once a year.

The Mexican citizens cross our border illegally. Some of them find work, and many of them send their earnings back to Mexico. Those earnings have added up to nearly $17 billion in the past year. Remittances, as they're called, are expected to become Mexico's primary source of income this year, surpassing the amount of money that Mexico makes on oil exports for the first time ever.

It's bad enough that the illegals send the money they make here back to Mexico. Now Mexico will get their SS as well.

Wow. Thanks (I think) for pointing out this is even worse for Americans than I thought! How can we stop this travesty?

And I who was a stay at home Mom and only earned 30 credit hours can not collect SS on my own.... something wrong with this picture and I let my congressman know it yesterday in a very long letter. In fact I told him I thought I could get together enough white haired seniors to march on DC should they decide to okay this agreement. Will be interesting to watch to see just who they care the most about.....old seniors or those thousands of illegals crossing the border..........silly question!!! I already know the answer and I lost the day I turned 65 and became bound to Medicare. Strange how one birthday can bring about a diminishing of health care..........

Isn't the deal that you get 1/2 your husband's or 100% of yours. What happens if your husband dies...do you get 1/2 of his? What happens to the other 1/2? This is THE MOST ROTTEN confiscation of our money...even without giving it away to illegals....and there is no way out of it without the IRS coming and getting you. IT STINKS!

Because I like to look up words and share:

to dephlogisticate (third-person singular simple present dephlogisticates, present participle dephlogisticating, simple past dephlogisticated, past participle dephlogisticated)

To take away the phlogiston, i.e. ability to burn, which is now understood to be chemically impossible
