Governor Wants Higher Sales Tax On Cars To Pay For Roads
WRVA ^ | Thursday, January 4, 2007 | Matt Demlein

Posted on 01/04/2007 12:35:02 PM PST by iceskater

Governor Timothy Kaine (D) wants to increase the sales tax on car to five percent, making it equal to the sales tax on most other goods. Overall, the Governor says his funding proposals would raise $800 million annually for transportation. Kaine also wants a $15 increase in the vehicle registration fee.

The proposals are very similar to what Kaine prosposed last year. The General Assembly did not pass a transportation plan during the 2006 session.

House Republicans are already shooting down the idea. Del. Leo Wardrup (R-Virginia Beach) says a two percent increase in the sales tax would be "a big wallup" for people.

Isn't it amazing how liberal governments cannot stay within a BUDGET of existing taxation. Until the people finally say NO NO NO -- will they ever respect the word "BUDGET".

I am donning my asbestos suit as I type this...............

Why shouldn't the sales tax on cars be the same as any other product?

I'm not saying I would support it, but I would support it a heck of a lot faster than an increase in the gasoline tax, which is a far more regressive tax than a sales tax on vehicles.

The $15 increase for registration is outrageous IMO.

If Mark Warner does not run again, then perhaps the GOP will win this governorship back in 2009.

There is a new law in Texas that requires a purchaser of a used car to get an appraisal from a licensed appraiser. That will determine what tax you pay on the purchase. Their closing the loopholes!!

In theory, I tend to agree with you. However, in the face of massive budget surpluses, ANY tax increase just annoys the living daylights out of me.

I know, I know. He talks a good talk and lied like most Dems.

I was familiar with his record as Mayor so I knew what we were in for. Sigh.

Tim Kaine and Jim Webb. I don't think I can stand it.

Yeah, Kaine's another superb Catholic who endorses a woman's right to kill her baby in her womb.

What a putz. This man loves to try and raise taxes.

In a word, NO.

Why is the alternative always to raise taxes instead of to cut spending?

Virginia assesses personal property tax on something like market value or blue book value. If you get a really good deal, you can be taxed on a higher value.

I tried that, only I actually did buy a car for $250. (needed a new transmission.)

When I went to title it the clerk laughed, looked up the blue book value, and taxed me on what the book said.

They'll get their money, never fear.

And imposing a bunch of toll roads on top of that. I don't mind toll roads, but don't increase the taxes on the other stuff in addition.

It's an obvious cash grab, but it begs the question: Why are cars taxed at a lower rate than other stuff?

On another note, if they are trying to justify it with a claim that the extra money will be spent on roads it would be fairly easy to prove that motorists are already overpaying through fuel taxes.

"Why shouldn't the sales tax on cars be the same as any other product?"

OK I'll try. Cars and houses are the only things that come to mind in this category. Yard sales might be next.

You buy a car or a house in this state, either the first time or the last time, the state is there to get its share. If the state would be satisfied with 5% on the first sale, you have a point, but each time you sell the car, the state is there to watch the title transfer. With hands out. So if the car is sold at 20,000, the tax is 1000, in three years it is sold again at 10,000, the tax is 500, and so on.

Same thing with houses, except normally the price increases. So a sales tax at %5 on the subsequent sales would really sock the buyer.
