San Francisco 49ers Announce Opposition to Senator Carole Migden’s SB 49

The San Francisco 49ers Thursday announced their strong opposition to legislation introduced in Sacramento by California State Senator Carole Migden.

The team’s opposition was joined by California State Senator Elaine Alquist, who represents most of Silicon Valley. Her 13th Senate district covers the cities of San Jose, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Mountain View, and Gilroy. “The 49ers are a Bay Area team and an important regional asset. I strongly oppose this legislation because it hurts our chances of keeping the team in the Bay Area.”

The legislation, entitled SB 49, is designed to limit the team’s ability to build a new stadium in the Bay Area outside of the city limits of San Francisco. If passed, the legislation would make it virtually impossible for the team to stay in the region.

Kind of like "The Mexican Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka."

(Obscure South Park reference)

The state has no authority to do this, do they?

Those idiots think they have the power to do any damn thing they want. I'm a life long die-hard Niner fan, but I'd love to see them tell "Carole" to F-off and then move to Sacramento.

Just what is the purpose of this legislation? It makes absolutely no sense! She must have a monetary personal reason for this..............

It's all such BS. Migden is only concerned with political fallout over the impending move.

A majority of the Niner's fan base is in the South Bay and peninsula. I think the move is a sound business decision.

"As a Lions fan I feel your pain. "

No doubt about it. There is one subtle difference... the Lions seem to want to win, but they're just incompetent. The Browns, they just don't care. The owner is Al Lehner's son. Randy Lehner couldn't care less about football. In the NFL you make money if you don't win a game and play to an empty stadium. So, ol' Randy bought himself a European Soccer Club to keep his interest. The Browns just provide cash.

I don't know which situation is worse, Lions or Browns. But, there are only a few teams of such monumental failure... Browns, Lions, Cardinals, (the Saints used to be in the club, but seem to be poised to leave).

Pity, the Browns and Lions used to be such good teams.

That's the Roselle NFL......Now even the Saints get to be "good". Seems to work for every team except Arizona Cardinals..........

OTOH, the Oilers became the Titans. :-)

Well, that's because they moved about 500 miles closer to Dolly Parton's home town.

Didn't they (and Baltimore) have a contest to propose the new name? I think the Texans did too. I wish the Texans were known as the Dreadnoughts.

The Cards' time will come (pass the Kool-Aid, please).

I root for them. It's hard not to like them. They have some impressive candidates for coach. Rivera, Cameron, Sherman, Whisenhunt, even Norm Chow. The belief that he will be the one to finally turn the Cardinals into a winner is a strong incidentive in luring candidates there.

"What, back in the 50s? (I wasn't even born then)"

Up until the 70s the Lions had some decent teams. The Browns had some good teams up through the 80s. Now both are in the same miserable abyss.
The Saints turned it around, but I can't see the Lions or Browns doing it for a loooong time.

You have to get association approval for the color of paint on your house, yet the Cowboys were able to build the blimp hangar, with the secretive help of Irving City Council.

Whoever brings in the most tax revenue has the most rights. There's a certain, twisted logic to it. Must be what the Democrats mean by "fundamental fairness". ;)

I believe you're right about that.

The Dreadnoughts would be a great name!

Oh once in a blue moon Detroit would make the playoffs, but I don't think they ever made it in back-to-back years. Although I did enjoy the one year with "Cocaine" Wayne Fontes at the helm when they destroyed the Cowboys in the playoffs before losing to the Redskins in the NFC Championship Game.
