LOS ANGELES Police Friday announced a second arrest in the racially motivated shooting death of a 14-year-old black girl who was gunned down -- allegedly by two Latino gang members -- in the Harbor Gateway area of Los Angeles last month.
A news conference was scheduled this afternoon to announce details of the arrest, but police earlier identified the second suspect as Jonathan Fajardo.
The other suspect, Ernesto Alcarez, 20, is scheduled to be arraigned Monday on murder, attempted murder and hate crime charges that were filed Dec. 26.
Cheryl Green, an eighth-grader at Stephen M. White Middle School, was standing with a group of friends on Harvard Boulevard near 206th Street when she was shot on Dec. 15. Three of her friends -- two other girls and a boy -- were wounded.
On Dec. 30, about 25 community activists and religious leaders walked to a makeshift memorial where the student died and called for peace and unity among blacks and Latinos in the racially divided neighborhood.
Latino gang members have warned blacks not to cross south of 206th Street, the so-called "forbidden line," under threat of violence, they said.
Earl Ofari Hutchinson, president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable, issued a challenge to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and city officials to beef up LAPD patrols in the neighborhood and reiterated his call for an emergency summit to address the issue of hate crimes in the city.
Pedro Baez, who writes a weekly blog called "Voice of the People," expressed outrage at the teen's slaying and said it was not indicative of the Latino community's feelings toward blacks.
Something is very wrong here...
The nation has a long way to go before it is even close to racism-free.

Probably.
Leftist media aside, they were charged with hate crimes. There was an incident in New York City much like that one too; a couple of white girls were attacked. Again, the assailents were charged with hate crimes there too.
The media may have their agenda, but the police aren't always on the same page, fortunately.
