The Truth About 'Inequality'
Investors Business Daily ^ | Jan. 6, 2007 | IBD

Posted on 01/06/2007 4:01:26 PM PST by FairOpinion

Economic Policy: With their newfound clout in Congress, Democrats have vowed to take action against a serious threat to America's economy: growing income inequality. Too bad the data don't back them up.

Give the Democrats credit for one thing: They know that by repeating something often enough, even if it's not true, the media will pick up on it and run it. It then becomes common wisdom, regardless what the reality is.

So it is with income inequality. Two key elements of the Democrats' agenda for their first 100 hours in power assume that income and wealth inequality in America is a.) growing and b.) needs to be addressed right away.

Democrats, for instance, want to restore pay-as-you-go budget rules, which would force Congress to find budget cuts or raise taxes anytime it spends more money. It sounds harmless, even fiscally responsible. But it is a Trojan horse for the Democrats to raise taxes, especially on those Americans they deem to be wealthy.

Look at taxes. The share of income taxes paid by the rich — defined as those in the top 5% of incomes — has risen from 21% in 1980 to 33.5% now. It's up two percentage points under Bush, even after his tax cuts supposedly for "the rich." Is that "reinforcing" inequality?

"The Democrats want socializm, plain and simple."

That's "PROGRESSIVE". They deny they're socialists, and they call their agenda "progressive" now.....

Comparing one man's income to another's is a useless exercise (except to raise strife and encourage envy) because one man's wage is irrelevant to another's.

They want power. The system that gives government the most power is socialism. If Fung Shui concentrated all the power with a handful of people in Washington, they'd be for that.

They don't care the least little bit for the "poor". They just want them dependant on government.

It is a form of voyeurism. You can only spend your money so don't worry about what anybody else makes!

While it doesn't account for all of the increase, the percent of income earned by the top 5% has also increased.

Yes. Agreed. The better measure of an individual's or a family's financial strength is the net worth relative to the local area. One family could be making $150,000 annually but have $600,000 in a mortgage, auto loans, student loans, and credit card debt. Plus, families with $100,000 annual household income are the norm here in Loudoun County, Virginia but very rare in a poor county in the mountains of West Virginia.

Oh, they're quite progressive. They are progressively running this country into the ground and her people into a sinkhole of misery and poverty.

The better word for the Democrats and their ilk is regressive.

I think you're right but I maintain that to measure at all is useless. Those that are obsessed with the "income gap" (or whatever you like) must believe that for one person to make money he has to screw someone else out of it. I don't know about you, but I can't recall the day when the boss came in and said, "Guys, I'm going to have to cut your pay. Bill Gates took all of the money.....the greedy bastard." Right? I mean, the very idea is absurd.

True, the amount of realized wealth in this world is never constant.

Perhaps the government should stay out of the business of wealth redistribution...because it brings out the worst in humans.

I agree. If someone wants some of our money they should provide something in exchange (service, knowledge, goods, etc). It's by this arrangement that progress is made.

Yeah, that's probably more accurately descriptive, or (if there is such a word), maybe "depressive"....
