Carolyn Ho is a mother on a mission.
She came to Washington, D.C., in mid-December to build support for her son, Army 1st Lt. Ehren Watada, the first commissioned officer to refuse deployment to Iraq.
Barring some kind of miracle, he will be court-martialed Feb. 5 at Fort Lewis. If convicted, he could be sent to military prison for six years.
Like many Americans, she believed she could come to the capital and change the world. Or at least her small part of it.
She was acting purely on instinct, wanting to do everything in a mother's power to protect her son. "I'm here to get what I can," said Ho, of Honolulu. "I'm going to put it out there."
At the very least, she hoped for some kind of letter of support. She was in Tacoma Wednesday for a news conference when she received a letter from Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif. Ho read an excerpt over the phone:
"The issue that [Watada] has raised deserves to be publicly debated and considered. And I will use my platform as a member of Congress and chair of the 'Out of Iraq' caucus to highlight the failed policies of this administration and stimulate discussion. ... Your son has shown great integrity and dignity in his objection to the war in Iraq, and I commend you for working so hard on his behalf."

Just doin' what Mothers do, like the criminal's Moms who say "He is such a good boy..."
Her name says it all.
There has been the occasional mother who admits, "...he has to die." But they are fewer in number, and they don't get attention from a press that's anti-death penalty.
Hope they make an example of this person.
"Officer".... unbelievable.
I'm sure she'll find plenty of those elected officials to help.
That should have been the end of the story. What does she want him to do? Sit in the OC and do nothing but collect his pay? She, her son, and every legislator who tries to get him off should be run out of the country on a rail.
I'm sure you're right and I'm surprised Maxine Waters didn't jump in the middle of it with both feet instead of just saying her son has great integrity and dignity.
LOL! Maxine didn't even get that right.
Mom Watada is just a little late. She never should have let him enter the military. Dimbulbs, both of them.
any and all mothers should stick up for their sons.
His dad is an antiwar activist and has been for some time. I believe he joined with an agenda, JMO.
Maxine Waters should stick to issues involving California and not put her ugly nose in to places it doesn't belong. Washington State has representatives that this "mother" can go to for a letter (and their demoncRat representative would no doubt be amicable to write such a letter). Our elected officials in Congress should also not made such anti-American comments during a time of war, and when they do they should be arrested for sedition.
1st Lt. Watada volunteered for military service, and knew that he might be called upon to serve in a war. Whatever happens to him, he deserves his fate. As my son and two of my nephews (all enlisted) serve (or have served) in Iraq, this man demonstrates his cowardice. How disgusting.
All sane human beings are opposed to war...
All sane human beings should do everything to avoid war.
All who VOLUNTEER for the military and ACCEPT an Officer's commission should be EXPECTED to obey LEGAL orders.
Refusal to do so brings significant consequences -- which should fall upon this clown's head like a load of bricks...
And it shall..

"I'm here to get what I can," said Ho
Yep, that's what Hoes say.
I couldn't agree more, SoldierDad and thank your son and nephews for their service for me.
Where's his dad? Just asking.
Ho! Ho! Ho!
Exactly, he's toast!
Thank you, and I'll pass on your thanks to them.
He might just be a COWARD.
He lives in Hawaii and I believe he's an elected state official.
