Christians in Rome were not persecuted for being Christian- all religeons were tolerated by the Romans. Christians were persecuted because they behaved a lot like the Ant-War Left in this country. They did not rise for the pledge of allegience, they did not honor state holidays and traditions and they didn't defer to the Emperor. No one knows for sure the exact number of Christian's who were executed and Christian accounts are no doubt exagerated, as pagans are now seen as bloodthirsty and cruel. But that's an argument for another day.
