George W. Bush is less overtly religious in his public pronouncements than many of his presidential predecessors. Yet his critics often portray him as some kind of zealot who sees himself on a mission from God.

Seems to me that the founding fathers thought they were on a mission from God, too, but I don't hear anyone criticizing them for that.

Then you must not be hanging out on any left-wing blogs, or you'd hear plenty of criticism of those racist sexist white males for not setting up the United States as a socialist state.
