Capping literally years of speculation on perhaps the most intensely followed unconfirmed product in Apple's history -- and that's saying a lot -- the iPhone has been announced today. Yeah, we said it: "iPhone," the name the entire free world had all but unanimously christened it from the time it'd been nothing more than a twinkle in Stevie J's eye (comments, Cisco?). Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch wide touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the sensor when it's close to your face, 2 megapixel cam, 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth with EDR, WiFi that automatically engages when in range, and quadband GSM radio with EDGE. Perhaps most amazingly, though, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course) with CoverFlow out of the gate. A partnership with Yahoo will allow all iPhone customers to hook up with free push IMAP email. Apple quotes 5 hours of battery life for talk or video, with a full 16 hours in music mode. In a twisted way, this is one rumor mill we're almost sad to see grind to a halt; after all, when is the next time we're going to have an opportunity to run this picture?
AAPL is going totally insane today, sure to be a 100 MM sh day. I'd have to bet AAPL ramps to 100 over not too much time if the market stays decent.
I actually shorted AAPL for about 8 minutes today and made 2 points. Glad I covered, LOL. Definitely not for the faint of heart!
They're shooting for 10 million iPhones sold in 1st year, to grab 1% of the market. Starts shipping this June. Exclusively with Cingular.
With 2 year contract:
4GB unit for $499
8GB for $599
I was thinking about buying Apple stock. Oh well.
Correction: The goal is 10M units in 2008.
You could buy the common 91.50 and sell some 85-struck covered calls, QAABQ, which are selling for $9, utterly insane. (They're worth maybe $7) That would "create" the stock about 3-4 points lower and give you four points of downside protection, though you'd probably be called out circa Feb expiry. On the next dip, buy more common (or lower struck calls) and be called out of those cheaper shares. That's a decent play. IMO, of course.
A dozen movies takes up 20GB on my video iPod. How much memory is this thing going to come with?
Steve Jobs in earth tones? What the heck??
So, what about an "iPod-only" version of this for those of us who do not want/need the phone/Internet functionality?? Some were speculating about a new high-end iPod. A version of this with only the video iPod functionality would be nice, and would hopefully reduce the price to something less than $500.00 (and with all the space they save by removing the phone/network features, they could add a bit more meory too!!).
Do I really need to add that in my previous post, "meory" was supposed to be "memory"??
: )
I feel better about my $10/mo. Tracfone now 8-)
I'm with you. I'm rarely away from a land line
or hardwired broadband internet..so Pay as you
go more than suits me. Even if i got one of
these phones, and used a lot more airtime and
services...i'd still want a pay as you go
contract, so that i wasn't paying for anything
i don't use, and get a smaller charge, when i
don't use it for a week or two at a time.
It's a nice secure feeling to have a phone
out on the road, and fun to play word blast
while in wait mode..but i usually don't
make more than a few outgoing calls on it
a week.
I'm just as interested in what i can do
with this unit, during a power failure
than i am being able to make an emergency
call. Last blackout, i played games on
my phone for a goofd part of it, but iff
there had been an extended outage, i'd have
had to stop using it, and recharge it from
my Xantrex battery pack, for over two hours,
before i could use it again.
Heck, i want to be able to watch iTV
during a blackou with this iPhone, and
not have to worry about recarging, but
just plug it in to my 600W Xantrex
Battery pack, and have all the units
capabilites run for hours and hours,
as long as the cell towers don't lose
power too.

God I hope it has GPS... (I really hope it can open word documents on it). That's about all I can see that they didn't mention. They didn't say PDF but OS X is tight with PDF anyway.
The memory looks small... especially if you look at how fast ipod went from 5 to 40+...
It's flash memory, rather than a hard drive, which is why they can keep the unit so small. It probably won't be long before 20+ Gb flash memory is available, though.
Wow, lots of gadgets in one. But, can it make a friggin phone call and not lose the signal every 5 seconds? That's the real test.
You said -- "So, what about an "iPod-only" version of this for those of us who do not want/need the phone/Internet functionality?? Some were speculating about a new high-end iPod. Well, first of all -- the memory. What they're dealing with in this iPhone is flash memory. And they will increase that, as the manufacturers put out bigger sizes. That's about it for now. Next year I'm sure we'll see bigger and better sizes. But, that's what you get for now.
In terms of the iPod, it's dealing with a hard drive. So, that's why it gets all that storage space. The iPod Nano does have flash memory, on the other hand. So, the iPhone is like an iPod Nano (in capacity to store).
Now, for the other features without the phone and Internet functionality. You *better believe* that they *will* come out with a new iPod with this kind of "Multi-touch" technology (as they call it). They have to or iPod owners would revolt. That's the long and short of it.
