Could This Man Be the Next U.S. President?
Frontpage Magazine ^ | 1/10/07 | David Frum

Posted on 01/10/2007 10:28:12 AM PST by Sunsong

The Republican presidential field for 2008 is led by one of the nation's greatest military heroes, a seasoned senator, one of the most famous and best-liked men in America. Running hard alongside him is the most successful mayor in American history, the man who saved New York City from crime and defended it from terrorism. And the third front-tier candidate is . . . a one term governor of Massachusetts.

How did this happen? How can it be that Governor Mitt Romney has come to be seen as one of the top three contenders for a presidential nomination? Romney has benefited from the secret issue in the 2008 presidential race: competence. Since Hurricane Katrina, Americans have lost faith in George W. Bush's ability to manage the government. In every poll conducted after the summer of 2005, about 60% of Americans describe Bush as "ineffective." Suddenly, everybody wants a president who can make government work.

Good on him for serving, and I know they tortured him pretty bad, but he was not really a military hero.

--And then he persuaded the legislature to require everybody to buy an insurance policy: no more free riding at hospital emergency rooms.--

--anybody out there know if this applies, for example, to illegal aliens?

I was watching 10 top gameshow hosts last night and I was thinking that Alex Trebeck would be a great candidate - but, unfortunately I heard that he's a native Canadian!

"Mark Sanford for President 2008"

Can anybody supply a link to interviews, articles, etc., where Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina was asked if he is considering a run in '08 and how he responded to that question? I see Sanford's name pop up occasionally on Free Republic, but I have no idea if he is interested in running for President.

One of the nation's greatest military heroes?

I won't go into any details, but that is absolutely ridiculous.

I think he has indicated that he isn't. Drat...He is as photogenic and articulate as Romney, and he is also a genuine conservative.

He could pick Rick Perry as his running mate and they could argue over who is more tall, dark and handsome. They look to be brothers those two.

I doubt that Romney is a real conservative, but he is the best, electable candidate that I have seen. I don't think Hunter or Brownback stand much of a chance...

A big thanks to you, Sunsong, for posting this superb article at Free Republic about Mitt Romney and the '08 field of contenders.

This article focuses on the qualifications for U.S. President that I place at the top of a long checklist for the Republican nominee. I have been attempting to convey many of the points presented in the article in my meager posts at Free Republic, but the article does a much better and more complete job of it.

This article is definitely a keeper for future reference.

Good lord - the man ran on his biggest achievement being:

Short lines at the DMV. !!!!! - I'm sorry - that hardly qualifies as Presidential level stuff.

I live in Greenville - Mark Sanford - a nice weak leader.

No way.
