Schwarzenegger Squashes Rumors Of Ditching GOP
CBS ^ | Jan. 10, 2007 | Hank Plante

The hot buzz around the state capital is that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger may abandon the Republican party. But Schwarzenegger addressed the rumors Wednesday after CBS 5 pressed him for an answer at an afternoon press conference.

Pressure on the governor to switch parties is coming not from Democrats but from his fellow Republicans, who are upset with his centrist agenda.

When asked by CBS 5 if he was considering switching political parties and becoming an independent, Schwarzenegger replied, "I'm proud to be a Republican. I have no intentions to switch parties, and I'm looking forward -- working with my Republican colleauges and also with my Democratic colleagues, together -- to solve the problems."

Of course Arnold wasn't considering switching parties. If he didn't switch parties all those years as a result of the certain Kennedy pressure, no way was he going to switch parties now.

I can't believe Republicans would be trying to force ANYONE out of the party!! That is so stupid it defies the imagination. What do they want an "exclusive club" or a "political party"? Just incredible.

No doubt, the uber-conservatives, that lost the mid-term election for Republicans, are the ones pushing the Govinator to make the big change. Am I right?

He should switch. He's not a Republican any more than Bloomberg is. More like a greenie if you ask me.

These are the "cut-off-your-nose-to-spite-your-face" conservatives in CA, who keep nominating unelectable candidates in CA, so Democrats keep wining. They are very happy and proud when they lose. We haven't had a single Republican elected to statewide office, until Arnold.

They are angry at Arnold and hate him, because he won and now we have a Republican governor, who has turned CA around after the Democrats almost destroyed it and vetoed some really bad bills the overwhelmingly Dem Legislature passed.

Our fine CA so-called conservatives are really mad at him for that, they long for real liberal socialist Dems to take full control of CA.

Are your really seriously saying all these things? Or, is it sarcasm?

Arnold is doing fine? What world are you living in?

Did you see his latest health care, green carbon cut down , and bond proposals?

I think that Arnold is an intelligent man who holds positions that are far more conservative than the ones he espouses publicly. He succeeds at virtually everything he does - from bodybuilding, to real estate, to his film career. In politics, success for him means maintaining power. Unable to run for the presidency, he realizes that his political future will remain in California and he has modified his positions accordingly so that they will be popular with liberal Californians. His formula is working and his next stop will likely be the Senate. I wouldn't mind seeing him kick Feinstein or Boxer out of office.

You seem to forget or ignore that Arnold hadn't raised taxes, despite the Dem pressure, he vetoed some really business killer bills the Dems passed, he vetoed the government run socialist healthcare bill the Dems passed, he vetoed the drivers licenses for illegal bills the Dem legislature passed, vetoed homosexual marriage and school indoctrination bills.

You should get down on your knees and thank God for Arnold, because a Dem governor would have signed all those bills.

What people also ignore deliberately is that Arnold is faced with an overwhelmingly Democrat controlled Legislature.

It is quite remarkable what he was able to accomplish under those circumstances.

I think Arnold is very sincere that he wants to do things to help CA, I don't think he is doing it for personal power.

I don't think he is interested in running for Senate -- I think that comes from the same rumormill, that is spreading the "Arnold will switch parties rumors".

If he doesn't run for Senate I hope that he calls up James Cameron and produces True Lies II.

Thank you for the enlightening post. Up here in Washington State we have an OVERWHELMING democratic majority and a dem governor. On the docket: criminal penalities for unlocked firearms in your home, healthcare for children of illegals, a new "Clean Puget Sound" campaign costing billions, global warming initiatives, etc.

You have my sympathies for living in a full Dem state. CA is just a hair away from that, Arnold pulled us back from the brink.

Unfortunately a lot of people, who keep telling us how conservative they are keep attacking and criticizing Republicans, when in fact the real reason the Republicans can't do more is because the Democrats won't let them -- but these same so-called conservatives never criticize Democrats.

That's true in the US Congress, as well as in various states. They don't understand the damage the Democrats do to the states and the country.

A Dem Gov who was willing to sign them was recalled. Don't under-estimate the people power.

Yes, Ahnold was OK in the early first term.

Since the debacle of the four initiatives, he turned into a Maria, Maria, Maria, Liberal DUmmy. No question about it.

His latest health plan is the BIGGEST tax increase on the state in ages. All the bond measures he supports are taxes in disguise. His stupid green initiatives on carbon control etc. are nothing but a tax increase at the pump.

Don't blame Republicans. Blame RINOs and he Moderates.

A leader's job is to convince the population. CA population in general is more conservative than people give credit. Look at all the initiatives that pass / passed.

More educated posts would be useful than the ones blaming conservatives / Republicans in California.

"CA population in general is more conservative than people give credit. Look at all the initiatives that pass / passed"

Conservative in your dreams.

The initiatives prove the opposite of your assertions. All of Arnold's conservative propositions in the Special election were defeated by large margins.

Look at the Demographics:

CALIFORNIA VOTER AND PARTY PROFILES

http://www.ppic.org/content/pubs/JTF_VoterProfilesJTF.pdf

"The Democratic Party currently has an advantage of 1.4 million voters over the Republican Party (7.1 million to 5.7 million) or 9 percentage points (43% to 34%), according to the Secretary of State.

Among those most likely to vote in this year’s elections, Democrats outnumber Republicans by a 7-point margin (44% to 37%), while 15 percent of likely voters are registered as independents.

... the fact that independents are more likely to lean toward Democrats than Republicans (42% to 28%) tends to work to the disadvantage of the GOP in statewide elections."

The Ahnold initiatives failed because of the overconfident, arrogant, dumb, and stupid campaigns that were run. Can you be sure that the people in general were ACTUALLY against those reforms? Each of them is actually popular with the people, but needs a strong leader to push. Not someone who is pompous on TV and is a liberal at heart.
