HOUSTON - Gov. Rick Perry said a state law allowing illegal immigrant students to pay in-state college tuition serves a good purpose, and he will fight efforts to repeal the measure.
Perry signed the bill six years ago, and state lawmakers have filed at least four bills seeking to end the policy. Critics have said it gives a financial advantage to illegal immigrants while U.S. citizens who are not Texas residents still must pay out-of-state tuition rates, which are higher.
Under the law, any student who has lived in Texas at least three years and graduated from a Texas high school qualifies for in-state tuition. The law also requires noncitizens to promise to apply for citizenship.
"I'm for leaving the law like it is because I think it serves a good purpose," Perry said.
Texas was one of the first states to pass an in-state tuition bill for illegal immigrants. Ten states currently have such laws, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
About 3,800 children of immigrants got in-state tuition in 2004, less than 1 percent of students in Texas colleges and universities.
I am embarrassed that this cheesehead is my governor. I have to bet that this idiot was not born here.
Texans really need to decide soon if they want to become another Kalifornia. You can only have so many warnings before you get what you deserve.
Oh, and while you're at it...don't bother to learn that cumbersome English language, we'll rewrite all the books in Spanish for yah....will that be okay???
Great. another ankle-grabbing, RINO governor.
CRAP! Gov. Goodhair, I wish I'd voted for Kinky!
"The law also requires noncitizens to promise to apply for citizenship."
Promise? WTF good is that?
Perry should sit in jail while we get all this strightened out. Does Mex. have room?
"Texans really need to decide soon if they want to become another Kalifornia. You can only have so many warnings before you get what you deserve."
Texas is still run by Republicans and has a record 14 billion dollar surplus this year. Not that I think that is a good thing really because it means they have been taking too much money out of our pockets.
However, we are no where near being in a fix like Kalifornia!!
On a more ominous note, I just read that Perry wants more money for PARKS!! We better get a REAL property tax decrease out of this surplus or heads are gonna roll!!
Is this final proof that Mexico has retaken Texas?
ping
"We better get a REAL property tax decrease out of this surplus or heads are gonna roll!!"
Yes! I agree. Sing it, sista!
"heads are gonna roll"??? Are you kidding me? Texans had a change to shake things up a little last November and they let it slip thru their fingers. Just look at PP(Pretty Perry) for all you non-Texans.
Toll road nightmare.
Taxes nightmare.
Fooled us again on property tax reductions.
And lied like a true Democrat over illegal immigration prior to the election.
I voted for Kinky knowing full well he was a joke but dammit, he woulda been our joke and maybe the R's woulda gotten the message.
"I voted for Kinky knowing full well he was a joke but dammit, he woulda been our joke and maybe the R's woulda gotten the message."
Did you vote for the dems in the Senate and Congress too, in order to 'send a message'?
Did you vote for Ross Perot back in the day?
Believe me, I know what you are saying about Perry(read my posts in this thread...)but..KINKY?? Pluuease...I don't want our state to be a joke!
The friggin' STATE doesn't have any money, it's the taxpayers money.
Should read, governor to use taxpayers money to educate people who broke U.S. law and have no right to use one penny of the peoples money since they have paid nothing into the system.
They should be deported, people should not be forced to give their money to them.
Typical obfuscation. The NUMBER of ILLEGALS (they are NOT immigrants) is not relevant to the PRINCIPLE.
If it was ONE SINGLE illegal that got in-state tuition it would still be a travesty. Perry is disgusting.
Whoa...! I didn't know Perry was a sick scumbag....?
Well dearie, no I did not vote for any you speak of. I have only voted for one Dem in my life(57 now) and regretted it shortly after. After all he was a friend of mine and was somewhat conservative until after election.
But I gotta tell you, this time in Texas i did not give a damn if Kinky was gonna be a joke. At least he could sing, write, play a guitar, and read.
IMHO, the only way they are gonna learn is sometimes they need a trip to the woodshed.
"ILLEGAL"
They are living in our country ILLEGALLY..
Hello? Is anybody home???
sw
"IMHO, the only way they are gonna learn is sometimes they need a trip to the woodshed."
I hear ya! Let's hope that the republicans got a taste of the 'woodshed blues' this past November!
Another Republican has been drinking stupid juice, or maybe someone visits these guys and tells them how it's gonna be.

The hits keep on coming --- from our side. Sigh.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
And while he's at it he will return The Alamo to the good people of Mexico..
You and me both. Thirty-nine percent of the vote puts him in. The bigest thing Texas government has going now is the new welfare state called "the disabled." Five hundred million dollars a year going to out of state contractors who contribute to the governor. I'm disheartened as of late.
It probably does serve a good purpose,...it's just that not allowing illegal aliens to pay in-state tuition rates serves a better purpose for the people whom Gov Perry was voted to represent.

With RINOS like this, who needs RATS?
I'll be waiting for the ACLU to file a Class Action Suit on behalf of all out of state students. /sarc
Governor Perry hails from Paint Creek, a small farming community about an hour north of Abilene
