Experts have said it appears Nifong's case is based only on the testimony of the accuser, who has told wildly different versions of the alleged assault.

Here's how this thing "ends"
Nifong is permitted to step down, the state appoints a black special prosecutor, who interviews the "victim", looks at the facts and decides that there is not enough to pursue the prosecution, and drops the case.
By appointing a black prosecutor they are hoping to avoid the racial tension that results when the charges are dismissed.
Everyone "wins"-the accused are off the hook, there is no rioting, Nifong serves out his term as DA and gets his pension.
The fact that Nifong played the black voters of Durham like a fine violin will be ignored.
The fact that the "88" will go back to their cushly lives at teachers will be ignored.
The fact that much of the media (Jim Rome) tried and convicted these guys in the media will be ignored.
And the fact that Duke threw these kids out on their collective asses will be ignored.
I hope the three accused sue the living ship out of Duke, the likes of Jim Rome, Durham and the accuser.
There is really no reason for a special prosecutor, if the AG determines that there is no case against the lacrosse guys.
The AG, if he agrees, should just hand it back to Mr. Nifong. No conflict of interest could cause any problem with Nifong doing what he should do, just go to court and move to have the case dismissed.
