Sen. Dodd Calls for the Removal of the Confederate Flag from South Carolina's Statehouse Grounds

(Greenville-AP) January 14, 2007 - US Senator Christopher Dodd calls Sunday for the removal of the Confederate flag that flies at the South Carolina Statehouse. The Connecticut Democrat was attending a Martin Luther King Junior memorial event at a Greenville church Sunday night.

He says black and white young people from South Carolina are fighting under one flag in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dodd says the Confederate flag belongs in a museum.

Dodd will be at the King Day at the Dome rally at the Statehouse Monday. The event was started six years ago as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People launched economic sanctions against South Carolina to force the flag from the Capitol dome.

It was moved from there and put out front at the Confederate Soldier Monument on Statehouse grounds.

"That decision is rightly up to the states to decide themselves."

Sorry, I'm still not getting this. You're either a part of the United States or you're not. You can't have it both ways. Why would you want to fly a flag indicating you're not? By your logic, if a state wanted to fly a Muslim flag or a Mexican flag, it would be Ok, because it's "up to the states to decide."

In consideration of that change

The same day the SC House voted to take the flag off the dome is the very day they broke ground on that monument. Mere coincidence?

Sounds like he's just trying to make a "splash"

McCain did the exact same thing when he disgraced our state.

The Senator has no right to tell a State what to do! At least the Federal Government of which the good (?) Senator is supposely part of don't have that right!

Look it up in the Constitution!

Wonder who the genius consultant was, that advised McVain to go butt heads with the evangelists in SC? That was surely idiotic, and will come back to haunt him for 08. Oh, wait a minute, we're talking about Senator "Maverick" himself here, so that was surely indicative of his own, personal convictions.

One could ask what a Senator from the state of Connecticut has to do with the internal affairs of South Carolina. You're right. A compromise was made in 2000. A compromise that should have never been made. We had to know it was coming. Give a damn yankee an inch, they take a mile

MY Gawd. There are many, many, many Confederate Soldier Statues in the Southern State. Most are on Court House Grounds. They are haunting to look at. The man with his rifle held by the barrell with the stock on the ground. The haunting thing is the eyes. The gaze in far away look and all are placed facing due South. There are Confederate Flags hung by the Statues. They are a part of history. Should we tear down everything that some do not like. Or should we preserve history. There is one such monument and flag in the very small town I grew up in. It is still there as it was when I was a child. The eyes still haunt me.
