I rode on the wild side -- when road rage met anti-Semitism

I am safe on the plane now.

On the way to Los Angeles International Airport this afternoon, I thought I was about to be murdered.

In the run-up to a weeklong business trip, I called the car service I've been using for years to pick me up at my home. The driver arrived promptly at 1:30 p.m., the arranged time.

The ride to the airport started out just fine. The driver began making small talk. I noticed he had a Jamaican flag on his dashboard, so I asked if he was Jamaican. He said he was, and he asked if I was American.

"Were you born in California?" he asked.

I told him I was born in Chicago, and he commented how different the two cities are. I asked him if he came directly to Los Angeles from Jamaica. He told me he was first in New York.

He was playing reggae music, so I told him I liked the music and asked if he was Rastafarian. He said he was and explained that Rastafarian is a form of Christianity. He asked what my religion was. I told him I was Jewish.

One of the things I like about the drivers of this company is that they are always from other countries. When I ride in their cars, I get to learn a lot about where the drivers come from and their views of life in America.

We were both quiet for a while, and then he began tapping to the rhythm of the music. I noticed he had a plethora of CDs stuffed into his visor. I asked him what other reggae or Rasta singers he had.

"My music is political," he said.

That was a pretty interesting comment, so I asked, "About what kind of politics?" "I hope as Jew," he now raised his voice and sneered, "you can take what I am about to say. My politics are about the Jews."

And then the rant began. Continuing to raise his voice, he told me that Mel Gibson knew what he was saying. He told me he used to favor the Jews until they, themselves, became the Hitler under whom they suffered. He told me that the Jews are indeed the root of all the world's problems today.

"The Jews, who were the victim of the white man, now think that they are white. They have forgotten and have become the oppressor," he said.

He continued to rant for another 10 minutes. Between his shrieking voice and the Jamaican accent, I could barely understand the things he was saying -- about Oprah becoming rich and just like the white man because of the Jews, and that Saddam Hussein's hanging was posted on the Internet because of the Jews. He then turned to look at me in the backseat, while driving on the freeway.

"You Jews are the cause of the black man's suffering today," he screamed at me as he took his hands off the wheel. "I suffer, because of you."

Until this point, I had been quiet.

"Please sir," I said calmly understanding my predicament, "please keep your hands on the wheel."

That was it.

"Just like a Jew -- always telling the world what to do," he responded. "Don't you worry about me. Worry about what you do in the world. You make my life miserable. I don't care if I die. Maybe I'm a terrorist, like my Palestinian and Arab brothers whose lives you have destroyed. Maybe I am just going to now crash this car and kill both of us."

He was completely hysterical. The car was swerving out of control.

I wanted to get off the freeway and onto a city street, so I could have an escape route to jump out of his car if need be.

"It would be best," I said quietly, "if you get off at Howard Hughes Drive, so that we can come directly into the airport the back way, because it is quicker, and I am late."

"There you go again, always knowing better than anyone else. I drive all the time. And now you Jews know better how I should drive."

He continued to rant. But he did get off on Howard Hughes.

"The tables are turning, mon," he said. "The tables are turning. You will no longer have the power. The world is sick of you and knows who you are."

We were now inside the airport, and I felt safer. I leaned forward, "You have no idea who I am or who my people are. All you did was spew hate."

"I don't want to listen to anything you have to say," he said. "You think about what I said. We've heard enough from you."

As he handed me my bags, he said, "Are you going to report me like the Jew did about Mel Gibson? Are you going to get all your Jewish organizations after me now?"

I walked into the airport, relieved to be alive and away from the guy. I thought about Gibson; about recently fired publisher Judith Regan, who was going to publish the O.J. Simpson book; about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad; about the brutal torture and killing of Ilan Halimi in France; about all the recent pronouncements of anti-Semitism throughout the world.

I looked around me and thought, "Who else hates us? Hates me? Do I need to live in fear right here in Los Angeles?"

Aside from studying the Holocaust and being marginally active in the Soviet Jewry movement, I never gave much thought to anti-Semitism around me. I believed it hardly existed and had little to do with living in the United States.

I was uncomfortable when other Jews talked and acted with what I considered to be a victim mentality. I drew my Jewish political lines around who saw the world as victims and those who saw the world as accepting. Victims were right wing. Those who saw acceptance were more liberal.

I remember my Wexner Heritage class of just nine short years ago and the many discussions we had about the golden age, in which we were living as Jews with growing world acceptance.

"Never have Jews lived with such freedom and openness," I recall one of the professors saying.

Israel was in a peace process. Jewish life was forming across the former Soviet Union. Israelis were attending conferences in Qatar. Here in Los Angeles, Peace Now was sponsoring dinners between its members and members of local Arab organizations.

Israelis were spending their Saturday afternoons shopping in the casbah of Nablus. Walls were coming down everywhere.

Indeed the driver was right about something -- the tables are turning, mon. People in high positions and people living at the grass-roots level are feeling empowered to hate Jews and articulate their feelings.

Perhaps the greatest resonance of the Gibson affair is that when a Hollywood somebody of such fame feels free to let fly his anti-Semitic beliefs, it gives permission to others to do the same. There is no doubt in my mind that the golden era of our acceptance is in decline. As Jews, we must see what its implications could be.

Personally, I am now faced with a terrible moral dilemma. This man knows where I live.

My wife stays in our house alone when I am away on frequent business trips. He is crazy, and I believe has great potential for violence.

If I report him, are we in danger? If I don't, is someone else? How safe are we in the world today?

Well, I do, too - but I manage to just take a *taxi* to the airport. I don't need a "car service" with a chauffeured limo.

I didn't have a clue Rasti's were brothers to Muslims.

They aren't, as post #51 points out. Their literature is full of references to Zion as the promised land, Babylon as the decadent world, and Haile Selaisse himself as the Lion of Judah.

Rstafarianism, and Reggae music in particular, took hold as a protest against colonialism -- so it sounds like this particular "Rasta" latched on to the Jews as his oppressor and incorporated it. It's not generalizable to Rastafarians, let alone Jamaicans.

And the gun another poster suggested would not be a bad bit of protection.

For a trip to the airport? What do you do with it when you get there?

Ah, I see. Car service can be arranged ahead of time and paid for on a business account. When I take a 7am international flight out of EWR, I have to leave at 4am to travel the 55 miles to the airport. There is no taxi service in my town...There is a guy, he has one car. Garden state limo on the other hand has no issues picking me up or dropping me off tween midnight and 5am, which is what most of the flights to China and Honduras seem to require.

Marley was a Zionist. Iron, Lion, Zion - sound familiar? The modern reggae I have heard on XM is simply the same violent anti-woman stuff that comes out of the rap industry... with steel drums.

We have a black guy in our congregation from Cuba by way of the islands. To say he has no love for Mohammed is an understatement. He went on a tirade a few Sabbaths ago expressing his disbelief at how many black folks in Africa fall into this horrible religion.

If this continues, there will be a time (again) when anyone who practices anything that remotely resembles "Jewish" religious practices will be persecuted the same as Jews for their faith.

Can you imagine the fury of the muzzie that finds out there are Christians who keep the Sabbath?

Thought I read somewhere that Jamaicans have the world's highest national I.Q. average.

"So are Jews to start hiding?"

That is the point...Americans of all stripes have no need to hide in America. The writer needs to do three things:

a. open his eyes to the real world around him and outside of his pampered enclave. People ARE out to get him
b. grow a pair...he writes like my grannie
c. Take responsibility, buy a gun, move if necessary, and remember most folk, most real americans, do not allow the sort of abuse he received. We don't put up with it. Call the company and complain.

This reminds me of conversations I have with my way out there leftie sister (actually works for the Washington Post). She is constantly saying things that simply are not so, and easilly disproved. She does it because all her friends do. She never hears a different view, she suffers from the 'false concensus effect' in which she believes her views are majority opinion. This guy is setting himself up for a fall if he does not hear that some folk ARE out to hurt him, and that his faith is now the subject of world wide hate, even amongst the pampered elites he represents.

Pretending there is no problem is not the same as solving the problem.

:"I am planning on fighting if necessary"

Great...Maybe after you convert you could get some of your fellow Liberal Democrat Jews to convert to Conservatism?

In my eyes there seems to be some kind of mental illness inherent in Jews that has them supporting the very people that would have them wiped out.

I'd give you 100 to 1 that the guy in the cab was a liberal. I mean both of them. And it never occurred to either one.

"I am constantly amazed at people who use a "car service" to go places." "This author implied that having the same "car service" all these years should've entitled him to deferential treatment"

Take a breather from being amazed :) Just as a bus is not a subway neither is a car service a taxi. Different.

And speaking of words that begin with a "d" and have an "f" as its third letter, I too expect deference from a car service driver, a taxi driver, or to anyone else I hire. That is the norm.

Thanks for jogging my mind out of sloppy thinking mode. No need to go through life with misimpressions based on "something I seem to remember from somewhere." A little web browsing yielded few appropriate results but this site - http://www.lagriffedulion.f2s.com/sft.htm - places Jamaica quite low.

As a Jamaican, they certainly didn't test me and come up with that info.

That is not Christian. That sounds suspiciously Muslim.

well said-when some jews whine and ask for understanding they're really in trouble and don't even realize it-i am armed and i don't sweat jew haters because i've dealt with them one on one and they bleed like everyone else-i don't have a problem with being hated for no discernable reason-just don't try to screw with me-one or the other of us will wind up hurt-i'm the only jew in my family but my son and daughter still have an attitude about the whole deal -so does my wife who's not even a little bit jewish-i expect this kind of thing, but so what-the world isn't a nursery school -either be ready to use firepower or go hang yourself is my advice to the writer-by the way,i only hate people for what they do-i could care less "what" they are-and for years EVERYONE in my family has had to be competent with firearms and own one or two or....:))-why did the writer feel compelled to tell the driver his background or inquire-sometimes people should just shut up and not ask too many questions

What would you have him charged with? Careless driving does not merit jail time, neither does saying stupid things while driving. Check your seatbelt and tell the guy to go ahead and crash, he'll have the steering column through his chest before you get hurt. He knows this, too.

As for the gun in the nightstand, good for you. I like to keep a Mossberg 590 handy, it won't fit in the drawer.

After reading this last night I started to wonder about the fact the writer said he was safe on the plane. Did he not call his wife ASAP and say a crazy rasti taxi driver just went off on me and he knows where we live? I didn't see where he said anything more then do we have to be afraid ,he knows where I live etc. I don't know how much I believe this story anymore..... He said I am safe on a plane....I would think if I was leaving my family home and a kook knew my address I would have dialed 911 and called home as soon as I got out of that taxi. I would have made sure my family was safe before I got on a plane.
