I think the taxi driver is much more than just a simple jerk. When he said, "Maybe I am just going to now crash this car and kill both of us," well, the words say it all. Yes, the author is a Jewish liberal who keeps voting for the party which screws his people, but maybe experiences like this will help him learn someday.
If I had been the passenger in that taxi, I would take those threats very seriously. I wouldn't be "shaking in my shoes," but knowing that the taxi driver could end up not being charged, or being released on bail...well, I feel a lot safer with at least one gun in the drawer next to the bed, rather than having them all locked up in the safe. No shoe-shaking, just suitable precautions.
As for the gun in the nightstand, good for you. I like to keep a Mossberg 590 handy, it won't fit in the drawer.
