"There's another reason these husbands don't divorce," added a sympathetic onlooker. "They don't want to admit to failure – they don't want to be ungallant. There's an unspoken nobility or gentlemanly understanding that divorce is something they don't do."

I believe there is some truth in this, especially in England.

Even in the US... Your word is your word, granted most folks don't take it seriously anymore, but some do.

Why would it be any 'worse' in England?

If there's any truth to it ping to Ivan...

I don't know about England, but I know a banker who married a teacher I taught with a couple years ago. He was a perfect gentleman, while she went to both dance clubs and strip clubs. Then she had multiple affairs with college age men (she's my age...27).

I truly felt sorry for the dude, because he thought that the chivalrous thing to do would be to pay for her rent, car, etc. WHILE THEY WERE separated. He may be chivalrous, but I'm smart. He may have had an extravagant wedding to a hot wife, but I've never had to finance my cheating trophy wife under the obligation of honor.

Ironically, I have a reputation for being very honorable with women. I'm just not so blindly honorable as to be a complete and total moron.
