51% of Women Are Now Living Without Spouse
New York Times ^ | 16 January 2007 | Sam Roberts

For what experts say is probably the first time, more American women are living without a husband than with one, according to a New York Times analysis of census results.

In 2005, 51 percent of women said they were living without a spouse, up from 35 percent in 1950 and 49 percent in 2000.

Coupled with the fact that in 2005 married couples became a minority of all American households for the first time, the trend could ultimately shape social and workplace policies, including the ways government and employers distribute benefits.

Several factors are driving the statistical shift. At one end of the age spectrum, women are marrying later or living with unmarried partners more often and for longer periods. At the other end, women are living longer as widows and, after a divorce, are more likely than men to delay remarriage, sometimes delighting in their newfound freedom.

In addition, marriage rates among black women remain low. Only about 30 percent of black women are living with a spouse, according to the Census Bureau, compared with about 49 percent of Hispanic women, 55 percent of non-Hispanic white women and more than 60 percent of Asian women.

In a relatively small number of cases, the living arrangement is temporary, because the husbands are working out of town, are in the military or are institutionalized. But while most women eventually marry, the larger trend is unmistakable.

LOL

I refuse to watch ANY show that has "sex" in the title.

I cringe at the thought of trying to raise a child in this day and age. Remember, it's not just the show - it's the ADS for it!

It is a nice route. It may be what God has in His plans for us. Once I accepted it was ok to be single, He provided me so much peace and security.

I have been divorced 13 years now and every day and every year bring more to my plate than I could have ever dreamed.

There is no doubt that a Godly marriage is the ultimate experience if you are called to that. But, if you aren't, then God does provide.

Because he likes to.

He likes to do house work? Go figure!

Years ago when our kids were tiny I was unemployed for a while, so Mrs. Chandler went to work while I was Mr.Mom. I found that keeping house was actually very easy. The trick is to get up very early and get all the work done in the morning, then the whole day is yours. I was very good at it. But like it? No way.

"....why are tattoos part of your equation?"

Because any woman who thinks the beauty of the female's body is enhanced by a tattoo -- strikes me as having the mentality of one who would spray paint graffiti on the Mona Lisa...

Again -- it is impossible for me to think of a tattooed woman as anything but an ignorant defacer of a piece of art.

Clearly -- based on the number of woman running around with tattoos -- I must be in the minority..

Amen!

I've always thought it telling that divorced women re-marry and co-habitate less frequently than divorced men.

Figured if the kids are older or grown, she can get a break from picking up after that other "kid" when she gets home from work.

Men on the other hand miss having someone cleaning up after them, doing the laundry, keeping the fridge stocked with food and having the bills paid so the electricity and phone don't go off!

You don't often get openings handed to you like that; what could I do?

It was so perfect. I love it.

Shhh.... don't tell anyone, but women don't like it, either! My husband and I dealt with it by contracting it out.

I completely agree, and as a woman, I would never deface my bod with an ugly tatoo.

I just look forward to when all these women are 80 years old--how funny and droopy those tatoos are going to look on them!!!!!

Unfortunately -- too many of these Kalifornicate ladies are dumb as a dead battery and have the morals of an ally cat..

My impression of them is that they are actually taught by the media and the popular culture from the time they are six years old:

1) To be scared to death that every man they meet is a potential Ted Bundy.

2) To act "tough" and not be nice to people - especially men - or they will get stepped on.

3) To crave external validation based primarily on their physical appearance - thus the tendency to have sexual relationships with men they don't really love.

They are not dumb and immoral at all - they are actually sad, miserable, lonely, and scared behind those cold, imperious social masks they have been trained to wear. Especially the prettiest ones, because the attention they get from men tends to come from the players (so-called "nice guys" are scared to death of them.)

Thus women from other cultures who haven't been raised in this way are natually more attractive to California men, who haven't figured out that the bratty behavior is all an act and aren't strong enough to just plow through it.

lol! Actually, we don't have a cat either! We have two small dogs but we live on the third floor of a condo. We have a huge balcony, so we've taught the dogs to go pee in a kitty litter box in the morning so we don't have to rush to get dressed and take them out....ALWAYS THINKIN HERE!

Wasn't a typo, unfortunately. Blue State Urban Single. This town (Seattle) is really good at stripping off most elements of the Y Chromosome.

Trying like heck to shake the Women Marry Jerks stereotype, but, thus far, my experience hasn't borne that out, yet.

Still trying. Problem is, I started dating too late in life (mid-twenties instead of late-teens), and, discovering I actually want wifey and baby now that stuff is cool, it's just a little too late. Scared to death of divorce - it's ruined many a friend's life.

These 'Women' in question will learn down the road, when they have no solid family base, (of their own) no husband for support (morally or financially) and they reach an age where they no longer appeal to the average male libido, they will be truly alone and bankrupt. (non monetarily)

This is why there is now so much emphasis on Botox, no fat diets, exercise machines, etc,,,,. And on the other hand, in Men, the need for Viagra, male organ enhancement drugs, pattern baldness prevention, etc,,,,.

We have become a hollow, amoral society of agnostic Narcissistic fools.

On the Bob Newhart Show, Bob's secretary confessed to having gotten a tattoo of a butterfly when she was obese. Now that she was thin, it looked like a prune.

what's so great about the mona lisa?
what the difference between decorating the body with tattoos and decorating the body with make up? don't talk about the permanancy of it either, a woman who puts on her make up everyday might as well have it tattoo'ed to her face.
